JY's Meat & Three: Important commitment catch-up

It is lunchtime somewhere. So, welcome back to the lunch hour read of the Meat & Three. Every weekday I dive into a big picture topic and three things to get you through a quarantine spring. We’ll take a look at some important commitments in the South, a good listen for the Stream of the Day and, of course, the Ty Freeman photo of the day.

THE MEAT: A BUSY RECRUITING ROUND-UP

Georgia State landed an important commit on Sunday night from Collin Moore, a 6-foot-6 forward from Sunrise Christian Post-Grad. The athletic wing has great size and shines in transition. He’s an active defender who competes with energy. His inclusion to the 2020 class is important one. He joins Kaleb Scott, a 6-foot-8 forward from North Carolina, and Evan Johnson, a guard from Oak Hill Academy.

The Panthers also have three transfers joining the team next season with JoJo Toppin (Georgia), Eliel Nsosee (Cincinnati) and Ryan Boyce (Memphis).

We don’t talk about Weber State on this site. Never. But we are today. Why? Because they landed Dillon Jones. And that’s an important pledge for the program. The South Carolina native was at Sunrise Christian in Kansas this season and was criminally under-recruited. Jones could thrive at a program like Weber, a school that needed him.

As we see schools work the transfer portal, understandably so, there will be players like Jones who give more value over their time in college than a band-aid roster addition.

Samford hired Gerald Gillion and a couple of days after the fact, the Bulldogs landed one of the best available players in the South in AJ Staton from West Oaks Christian. Staton was one of the best available guards I saw during the high schools season. He warranted some high-major attention throughout the year. As Samford builds a program, landing a player like Staton is paramount for setting up the foundation.

Also notable: Troy scored an important commitment from Antwan Burnett, a long time top performer at our events. The 6-foot-5 two-sport athlete should be a physical guard in the rotation for his career. Also, Alabama A&M nabbed Florida guard Eric Lee, a talented combo who shined with Team Speights at our events over the years.

THE NOTE

As usual, keep up with the college-bound players in the Southern states. We have lists growing for the following states:

Alabama
Florida
Georgia
North Carolina
South Carolina

THE STREAM

I listened to the Flying Coach podcast featuring Steve Kerr and Pete Carroll. The two championship coaches talked a lot about the draft process from their point of view.

I think both of these guys are uniquely smart at their jobs and have great perspective from their time in the pros, college, front office and from the media.

With the NFL Draft doing a virtual draft this year (welcome to our fantasy football world, pro football decision-makers),

THE TY FREEMAN PHOTO OF THE DAY

The lens of Ty Freeman catches it all. This week we look take a look at the perspective that Ty brought from the 2019 Best of the South at the Georgia World Congress Center.
