New Beginnings for Jameel Rideout and Destin Logan
Juniors Destin Logan and Jameel Rideout have found a new home in Berkmar High School. Entering the season, Berkmar (3-1) was already considered a 7A contender largely due to star forward Malique Ewin. The addition of Logan and Rideout have increased those title chances. The duo brings a different dynamic to the Patriots.
As a lead guard, Rideout is a great decision maker with a high IQ. He knows when to get the ball to his teammates and when to pick his spots and score. He can stop on a dime and rise up for a pull up jumper which is absolutely lethal. Rideout is also a threat getting to the basket. He uses his quickness to blow by defenders and finish at the rim. His excitement to be playing on this Berkmar team was evident.
"It was a big move," he said. "It was a little scary at first but it worked out in the end. I'm excited to be here. There's a lot of talent on this team. Once we all get familiar with each other, we'll be a really good team."
Logan also echoed the statement about the excitement to play with such a talented team.
"We have a lot of talent and we're building out chemistry," he said. "I'm excited about having the chance to make a state run these next few seasons since we are all juniors."
Logan is a player who can make a name for himself this season. I first saw him at our Fall Preview camp where he (along with Rideout), was named as a top performer which you can read about here. He's a lefty with great play making ability. He has proven himself to be a knock down 3-point shooter which has already become a huge benefit for Berkmar. His long frame allows him to make an impact on defense, getting his hands in the passing lane and altering shots.
"I think I am a knock down shooter," Logan said. "I'm long so I can play defense and get into passing lanes. I can also pass when defenders close out on my shots to create for my teammates."
As far as what Rideout thinks his best attribute will be for his new team, he said "I bring leadership. "I'm vocal on the court. I can lead my team, guard the best ball handler, and get my guys going throughout the game."
Both Logan and Rideout add another dimension to the Patriots. Rideout saw his stock rise after a productive summer, adding an offer from Charleston Southern. While Logan has not yet received an offer, I have no doubt that this season will change that for him. These two could be the key to the Patriots making a deep run in the state playoffs.
