NCISAA June Live Period Recap

I am a fan of team camps and the ability that it gives us to evaluate talent. It is much easier to evaluate players in an AAU or team camp setting than in individual showcases.

This month was the first time that college coaches were allowed to evaluate players in a team camp setting during June. Thirteen states worked with the the National Federation of High Schools and were allowed to hold these events. North Carolina was one of them and the NCISAA and the NCHSAA had two separate events at Greensboro Day School and Davie County High School over the weekend.

Here is a recap of what we saw during the first weekend of evaluation for high school prospects.

Top Underclassmen from the NCISAA Live Period Event

Jaydon Young, Greensboro Day

The 2022 prospect from Goldsboro, North Carolina had coaches and scouts in the building talking. His size and his frame were the two words used the most. He is a perimeter scorer who can also get into the paint and is crafty off the dribble. He has length, big hands and he doesn't seem to be bothered by the pace of the game and the overall size difference playing against the top teams in the state as Greensboro Day always seems to do. The 6-foot-3,185 pound guard runs the floor well and impressed me with his rebounding ability at the shooting guard position.

Anthony Smith, Victory Christian

Smith's scoring ability was impressive throughout the weekend. He consistently made shots from the outside. In the first game of the day on Friday, Smith knocked down three triples against The Burlington School en route to nine points. At 6-foot-2, the 2021 prospect has good size and has a really good looking from on his shot. Smith can be one of the those Charlotte area players that has a natural scoring ability and will continue to be one to track going into his junior season.

Cyncier Harrison, Providence Day

Strong ability to score the basketball and get into the paint. The 5-foot-10 guard who plays with PSB Elite 16U is very shifty with the ball in his hands and is cat-quick. He was a top-performer at The Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions in May and his play has only improved. He can score over bigger guards with his ability to elevate on jump-shots. The 2021 guard should be tracking at the low-major Division One level.

James Wilkins, Calvary Day

The 6-foot-2 sophomore guard ran the offense and is a vocal floor-general. He averaged 18.5 points per game during the NCISAA event and did so on shots from all spots on the floor. He can attack off the dribble and can score with contact. Calvary Day has sent multiple prospects to the next level and Wilkins is on the track to add another player to that list from the Winston-Salem program.
