2018 Georgia Fall Preview Team 2 Evaluations

We had a full camp on Sunday for the 2018 Georgia Fall Preview. Each team was balanced with talent, size and grade levels. We begin our team by team evaluations today. Meet Team 2.

Kalik Brooks, 6-5 CG, Alpharetta 2019: One of the more intriguing players in camp, Kalik Brooks continues to shine through to our HoopSeen staff. A well-rounded prospect standing at a long-armed 6’5, Brooks has the size and capabilities to be stretched across all three perimeter positions. A good feel for when to pass and when to score makes him a dual threat that can pose several different problems. Even when cut off there seems to be another counter or stretching of his arms that allows for a unique finish around the rim. Brooks is poised for a breakout season at Alpharetta and don’t be surprised to see more programs get involved with this high academic prospect.

Dallas Howell, F, 6-6, Enterprise (AL), 2020: The Alabama native was one of our top performers from the camp and was one of the hardest playing campers in the field. Read more about his day HERE

Matthew Jenkins, PG, 5-10, Sprayberry, 2019: Team 2 got a rebounding boost from an unlikely source as 5-10 guard Matthew Jenkins made an impact on the glass. For his size and position, he rebounded very well which he used to control the pace of the game. A very quick first step landed him in the teeth of the defense as this senior guard had a knack for attacking small seams. A good variety of moves propelled him past defenders as his ability to start, stop, and start again gave him different gears to choose from. - Tai Young

Jaylon Simpson, 6-2 G, Sprayberry, 2020 (pictured left): Athleticism is a key ingredient to the makeup of Sprayberry guard Jaylon Simpson. It’s certainly not the only thing but it’s hard to deny that a lot of his success came from a quick first step along with the ability to rise over others. A good dose of his finishing was set up by some quick hesitations and crossovers mixed and tied together. His size and athleticism allows him to defend bigger players, giving his some defensive versatility going forward.

Lance Smith, 6-2 G, Salem, 2019 (pictured right): Being involved in basketball it’s hard to have not heard the term “all gas no breaks” by now. It’s a fitting phrase for Salem guard Lance Smith as from the opening tip-off to the final horn, Smith left everything he had between the lines at our Fall Preview. His strong downhill guard presence ignited several breaks as both the defense and his teammates had to keep up with his breakneck pace. Steals, deflections and loose balls were scattered throughout Smiths resume as he was definitely one of the hardest working players in the gym. Anyone that suits up against him this season will need to get to sleep early the night before.

Jefferson Stepp, 6-4, G, South Forsyth, 2019: Jefferson Stepp made several threes from well behind the arc at our Fall Preview. Once his feet were set, Stepp was able to be a more than reliable option for guards that found themselves too deep into the defense. There’s room to grow as a ball handler but for now, Stepp should constantly draw a defender with his size and long range shooting.

Reuben Woods JR, SG, 6-2, Redan, 2020: Some crafty finishes with either hand kept shot blockers at bay. Reuben Woods made simple plays off of ball screens and in the open court to give his team solid looks from deep. On the other end, he guarded his position well by bodying up drivers that didn’t have any change of direction. That same anticipation was used on the glass as he positioned himself for some rebounds.

Alexander Zwerner, SG, 6-2 Westminster, 2021: A couple of pull-up jumpers got things going on the right track for Westminster guard Alexander Zwerner. A high arching jump shot made them difficult to contest as he could afford to take some semi-challenged shots. His handle was also solid enough to be serviceable at both guard spots. In the category of defensive positioning, where some players are still well behind the curve, Zwerner covered some of his teammates by being in the right place at the right time.
