2023 HoopSeen Tip-Off: 17U Standouts Pt. III

SUWANEE, Ga—Tip-Off weekend is the best way for us to get a first look at players as they start their travel seasons. This is going to be an important stretch for the 17U division players now that they’ll be firmly in the recruiting spotlight.

We’ve been breaking down standouts from the division, and that brings us to another group of players that impressed.

It’s early in the season, and Pivot Elite is still getting into the flow of things, but this is a group that has plenty of interesting players on it. One of the guys that was impossible to ignore was Will Thompson. He’s got a flamethrower on him, and he’s ready to torch nets as soon as he hits the floor. His seven 3-pointer game on Saturday was impressive on its own, but then he followed it up with six more triples in his next game. Shooting is at a premium right now, and this is a guy who clearly excels in that regard. - Josh Tec

South Georgia Elite impressed everyone this weekend, but my favorite player from the program was Quarterman — and he may be the most unheralded prospect from the weekend. The 6-foot-2 guard impressed me with his ability to keep ball-handlers in front of him on the perimeter, as well as his defensive versatility. The icing on the cake was Quarterman’s ability to make shots. He has good range and I can see him being a popular prospect amongst college programs this spring. - Garrett Tucker

This Team Loaded 828 program has a lot of guys that look like they can play at the next level. Mohr showed out on our biggest stage so far this season with his shooting ability and a knack of putting the ball in the basket. The Florida native was one of the best shooters we saw on the weekend in an event that had no shortage of guys that can let it go from beyond the arc. The 6-foot-three shooting guard has good size at that position and should be able to find a spot on a college roster. - Justin Byerly

Alston started to rise as a prospect within the last several months. He’s a guy that could continue to emerge as a recruiting target as the spring goes on. He had a solid weekend with Team Huncho at Tip-Off. Alston is a gifted scorer. He’s especially dangerous from three-point range, but he can create off the bounce as well. He showed his multi-level scoring throughout the weekend and continued to show that he’s a guy coaches should highlight on this Huncho roster. - Josh Tec

Gatlin opened the weekend with a tremendous game for Pivot Elite. He dropped 16 points on Friday and showed a lot of the tools that I’ve liked in his game for a while now. He’s a crafty, shifty lefty who can knock down shots from the perimeter or maneuver his way toward the basket. Gatlin’s feel and vision are where he shines the most–in my estimation, at least. He’s such a great passer. There were multiple times throughout the weekend in which he connected with his guys for notably great assists. - Josh Tec
