2023 Spring Preview Top Performers II
SUWANEE, Ga—The 2023 Spring Preview at Suwanee Sports Academy was a perfect warm-up between the high school and travel seasons.
We talked about some top performers already, and we’re doing to delve into some more of the day’s best now.
A player that can legitimately impact the game in a variety of ways outside of just scoring, Mosley is a sophomore with breakout potential this summer. He leaves his mark on games in one way or another. He has a good frame at the guard spot and brings a good overall skill set on offense. He can be a consistent all-around scorer that gets hot from the 3-point line.
Payne not only had one of the most well-rounded games, but he also has one of the higher upsides too. He has a fantastic frame. He’s a long forward who moves well and has plenty of skill in his game. His offensive bag is deep. Payne has good footwork around the basket and can hurt teams from the perimeter too. Defensively, he uses his length well to block shots and disrupt offenses. He’s only a sophomore, so he can be poised for a breakout as early as this summer.
Brandon Lanier had an eye-opening day at camp on Sunday. He’s a 6-foot-6 forward with a jumper that’s a serious weapon in his arsenal. His touch from the 3-point line impressed early on. He’s also a magnet for the ball. When guys pursue loose balls as Lanier did, good things tend to happen. On defense, he used his length as a disruptor. A 2025 to keep an eye on over the spring and summer.
The camp coaches largely agreed that Peters was one of the best players of the day. It’s hard to argue that point because he was terrific. The 6-foot-2 guard is shifty and athletic. He got to his spots and scored from all levels on Sunday.
Wellborn was one of the first players that I wasn’t as familiar with to make a prominent impression. In his first game, he started off by drilling shots from beyond the arc. Then, he started flexing some vision and IQ with great passes. It’s rare in a camp setting to see someone actually get more height on his bounce, but it seemed like Wellborn was able to find a way to get up on dunks more as the day progressed.
