March to Macon: Let's get into Class 2A

No 1 Seeds

Dodge County, Model

Spencer, Providence Christian

Columbia, Windsor Forest

South Atlanta, Westside-Augusta

First Round Game(s) to Watch

Drew Charter at Columbia: If you were to say that this was the 2A championship game, nobody would bat an eye. There aren’t many first round games that can stake that claim. Whoever wins this is the team that we’re picking to make the final four. It’s one of the best first round games in the state.

The Most Interesting Quadrant

The bottom left group has multiple contenders in it, and that makes it the most intriguing quadrant in 2A. Whether it be North Cobb Christian, Providence Christian, Spencer or a surprise team, there are no set-in-stone picks to make it out of this part of the bracket. It’s going to be fun to watch it play out.

The first round matchups are as follows:

#3 North Cobb Christian at #2 Redan

#4 Rockmart at #1 Providence Christian

#3 Butler at #2 Tattnall County

#4 Cook at #1 Spencer

Final Four Picks

Before the season, I predicted Spencer, Drew Charter, Westside-Augusta and Thomson.

It always seems like this classification is pure chaos, so here are the updated final four picks that will all probably be wrong after the first round.

Putnam County: This is a pick based on star power. Eren Banks is that guy for the War Eagles. It’s not just him running things, but he’s the kind of player that can propel a team to a winning streak during this time of year. They were bounced earlier than expected last year, so I’d venture to guess that Putnam County is eager to right some wrongs in this tournament.

Spencer: They won 4A last season, and they have returned most of the players from that squad. They’ll have earned a trip to the final four by making it through some tough teams, but they’ve experienced winning tournaments before, so we’re expecting the Greenwave to make a splash again.

Columbia: It’s hard to pick against Drew Charter. That’s a great team with a shot at making a deep run, but Columbia has been an absolute force this season. The Eagles are 27-1 with their only loss coming by a single point in a road rivalry game. They’ve dominated like few teams have. It wouldn’t be wise to go against a team that has put this kind of season together.

Westside-Augusta: The reigning 2A champs have a good chance of repeating. The Patriots have been operating as one of 2A’s best teams again, and we saw them win it all a season ago, so there’s no reason to assume that they can’t make it back to the final four at least.

The 2022-23 2A Champions are…

The Columbia Eagles.

They’re a single point away from being undefeated. Although there are multiple teams in this bracket who won state championships last season, Columbia is having a dominant season.

Sometimes riding the hot hand is the move, and we’re going to do that for our 2A championship pick.
