Three Point Play with BP Dec. 23 2020
I've spent the entirety of the last few days in the gym catching some high school hoops. My main takeaway? There's nothing like high school basketball in the state of Georgia. This week, I'm taking a look at the depth of teams around the Peach and some players who made a big impression.
1. GHSA Depth
There is no other state that is consistently putting out the quality of matchups like Georgia has been doing since the start of the season. Pace Academy's Play for Change and Marietta's Lemon St. Classic gave us a chance to see the top teams in the state go head-to-head. After seeing certain matchups play out, I think it is safe to say Georgia hoops is looking deeper than ever. On Saturday, we saw red hot Pebblebrook fall to Wheeler. Turn to Monday and we see Wheeler fall to Grayson in the AAAAAAA state title rematch game. Fast forward one more day to Tuesday and we see Grayson fall to Pace Academy. The top teams in Georgia continue to go at each other, which myself, along with all other basketball enthusiasts are very happy about.
When you think about the AAAAAA and AAAAAAA classifications, I can think of at least 10-12 teams that are real contenders. These two classifications are absolutely loaded with the likes of Grayson, Pebblebrook, Milton, McEachern, Wheeler, Berkmar, Kell, etc. Outside of those two classifications is Pace Academy which is looking like the best team in the state after earning wins over North Gwinnett and Grayson. Matthew Cleveland has also been making his case for Mr. Georgia Basketball with the scoring clinics he has been putting on. The Lemon St. Classic highlighted Georgia's depth even more with teams making big statements like Eagles Landing who beat Sandy Creek and Evans who came to Atlanta and earned wins over Lanier and Norcross.
2. Unsigned Senior Sleepers
I found myself puzzled at the fact that some of these unsigned seniors are still so under the radar. I know recruiting has looked different since covid-19 hit, putting all types of stipulations on things, but talent is talent. From the events that I was in attendance for, these are the seniors I saw that I believe D2, LM and MM coaches need to pay some serious attention to.
- Rashad King - Evans
- Joshton Mincey - Evans
- Joseph Scott - Denmark
- Zyair Green - Miller Grove
- Bobby Moore - McEachern
- Dash Boston - Heritage
3. Tournament of Champions Holiday Classic
While there will be no games on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, do not worry. The Tournament of Champions Holiday Classic is putting on a great slate of games just one day after Christmas at Wheeler High School. We will be able to see more of the top teams and players go head-to-head with the national bracket beginning on Friday.
