Josh Tec's Georgia Cup III Notebook: Friday and Saturday
SUWANEE - Championship Sunday is about to begin at the Georgia Cup III, and it's been a great weekend of hoops so far. Here are three quick notes from the first two days of action.
Daquavious Harrison’s scorching-hot game: On Saturday afternoon, Daquavious Harrison caught fire from the 3-point line. Harrison netted nine - yes, nine - 3-pointers en route to a 29-point game for the Atlanta Astros.
Harrison’s first eight field goals came from beyond the arc, and then he completed a highlight-reel alley-oop before adding one more from deep to cap off his sensational performance.
Even after watching the game unfold in front of me, I did a double-take when looking at the scoresheet afterward.
If this isn’t the best shooting performance of the weekend, I can’t wait to see what tops it.
Atlanta Allstars South: This squad is a blast to watch. The tandem of Wheeler Drake and Ernesto Almonte caught my attention at an event earlier this spring, so I was eager to get the chance to see them again.
Drake and Almonte didn’t disappoint, and the rest of the squad was as cohesive as I remembered. Team basketball permeates throughout the entire Atlanta Allstars program, and it showed in their game against EOTO Brothers 2024.
Seven Allstars finished with six or more points. Almonte and Samuel Mead led the way with 10 points each, Logan Sinkfield scored 8 points, Jon Koger and Nicklaus Smith finished with 7 points each, and Porter Haire and Wheeler Drake added 6 points each.
Since that game I saw on Friday, this squad has remained undefeated and have a 3-0 record on the weekend.
Kannon Roberts’ Eye-Opening Performance: On Friday, EOTO Brothers 2022’s Kannon Roberts had a bit of a coming-out game.
He scored 25 points, and he had several people inquiring about him.
Roberts made a killing around the basket, but he also showed that he’s a really solid 3-point shooter.
While the team lost, Roberts had a game that opened up a lot of eyes.
