The Best of Bob Gibbons from JB

SUWANEE, GA - The legendary stage of The Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions was this past weekend at Suwanee Sports Academy. The granddaddy of travel basketball events hit a little different this year. The last couple of years with COVID going strong and then last season with it still around, didn't quite feel like the same Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions from years past but this year it felt like it did from years past. Let's take a look at some of the best of the best.

Best Game - Team Trezz vs Florida Rebels. The team from the eastern part of North Carolina had quite a showing at the event. They knocked off two Nike EYBL teams before losing to another one in the Georgia Stars in the finals. The game that we are talking about was the first game for both teams on Sunday. The Rebels came out hot and led by double-digits for most of the game. The underdog against a team with a guy going to Duke, Sean Stewart. The Rebels were throwing down dunks left and right, Stewart went viral with his 360-degree dunk in transition.  It was late in the second half that Team Trezz kept coming back, point by point. It was huge, crowded game with fans on all sides. A heck of a performance from Keyon Webb (25 points) Treyvon Byrd (29 points) and Torey Alston with 20 points. The motor that Trezz played with just finally slowed the Rebels down and wore them out.

Best Stock-Riser - A guy that I feel like will be a name to track over the next few months coming into the next live period is going to be Team Wall's Ryan Crotty. As the old saying goes, shooters shoot, Crotty shoots and shoots it at a high-clip. He has the size at the guard spot to cause issues at the next level. Crotty is close to 6-foot-5 and with his consistent shooting he should pick up some offers during the June live period and July.

Best Sophomore - Sir Mohhamed, Team Curry - The son of former NBA standout and Kentucky big man Nazr Mohhamed, the younger Mohhamed has all of the tools that will lead him to a high-major recruiting story over the next two seasons. He has the size, ball handle, rebounding ability and length that college coaches covet. His shooting from outside was very consistent, knocking down multiple shots from beyond the three-point line.

Best Freshman - Eli Ellis, Team Loaded NC - The video cameras follow him. The media mixtape mafia follow him. When he walks by, people say "There he is". It is something that Ellis has had to deal with and he has handled it a lot better than some other guys that have that same following. What Ellis does on the floor is always produce, he always gives his team a chance to win at the end. He plays with some swagger and he knows how good he is. He is a guy that will jaw with the opposition, he will get in your face and defend and he at the end of the day will will his team to victory. I like him, I think he is going to be a really good college prospect.

The "Ant Man" Anthony Edwards was in the gym on Sunday. The Atlanta-bred guard with the Minnesota Timberwolves didn't let many people know he was in the building and didn't stay long but it's always cool to see guys come back to the stage. Dennis Scott was also in attendance, watching his son play. Scott, a standout with the Orlando Magic and a career 39% three-point shooter in the league.
