#Gibbons: Carter Wilson's Saturday Notebook
Saturdays at the HoopSeen Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions have become a thing of legend among hoop heads in the southeast. This Gibbons Saturday lived up to the hype as all of the hoopers in the building were vying to make their name. Here are a few takes from the day of action.
Freshman Zion Williamson was the discovery of the day. The South Carolina Hornets 2018 wing was a standout in their nail biting game against Game Elite. Williamson is a 6-foot-4 wing with outstanding athleticism and does a little bit of everything on a basketball floor. He scored the ball very well above the rim with a number of big throwdowns and rebounded the ball at a high level as well.
Florida Elite 2016 guard Keon Clergeot has played at an elite level all weekend. Clergeot has unbelievable quickness and has used that to get into the paint, where he has been a disruption for defenses all weekend.
E1T1’s Luis Hurtado has been one of the better point guards that we have had this weekend. The 2017 point man has an understanding and feel for the game that is very rare for high school guards and can distribute the ball with the best of them.
Game Elite & Wheeler 2017 guard Darius Perry has looked very impressive in the 16U division. Perry was fantastic from beyond the arc, hitting a number of threes. Where he really shines is in his tenacity, motor, and defensive abilities.
Team United 2019 has ran through the competition of the 15U division. They play a team brand of basketball and everyone on the team can beat you on any given night. The standouts today were Christian Brown and Joseph Tharrington. Brown is a long forward who is a sniper from deep. He saw a big basket today and seemingly never missed. Tharrington is a lead guard who makes all the right decision and hits shots when they come his way.
David Moya was great for Team MOAM in a win over Heat Check, hitting the game winning basket and making the subsequent steal to seal the win. Moya is a very sound lead guard that is a shot maker and plays well in ball screen situations and.
E1T1 2018 big man Silvio de Sousa is a monster in the 16U division. The Angolan post player rebounds at a high level and has a combination of size and athleticism that is very rare to see in a young prospect. 2017 forward Tyler Polley, who has athleticism and length for days, joins him in the E1T1 frontcourt.
Highlight of the day goes to Alex O’Connell who threw down a huge dunk over a Southern Stampede defender. It was the loudest that I’ve heard the crowd all weekend.
I really liked what I saw from Upward Stars 16U 2018 guard Nate Hinton. He is probably the fastest player I have seen all week and plays with extremely high energy. Look for high major coaches to be all over him in the near future.
The talent pools in the underclassmen divisions at Gibbons have been fantastic. A lot of future studs have been seen and started their story here this weekend. It has been fun to learn new names as well as the up and comers that we will begin to hear more and more about.
