2022 Grassroots Basketball Finale Top Overall Performers
VIRGINIA BEACH—HoopSeen’s 2022 travel season ended with a bang at the beach with the Grassroots Basketball Finale. The partnership with HoopGroup brought players from every state on the east coast to a central location and provided them with a platform to showcase their talents in front of college coaches from Maine down to Florida. With this collection of talent, there are going to be several players from multiple age groups that we’ll be highlighting throughout the week. To start things off, we’re excited to bring you our first group of top performers from the 17U division.
There’s not a lot of flash to Perkins’ game, but he gets things done with his high motor and fundamentally sound approach. He does a little bit of everything well. The lefty guard can score from multiple levels, and he’s especially dangerous around the basket where he uses his physical frame and savvy feel for the game to his advantage. Elsewhere, he’s an intelligent defender and tenacious rebounder. I’d hate to oversimplify it, but he’s just a guy who’ll make winning plays. Perkins took an injury that sidelined him from Saturday on, but he showed that he was clearly one of the best players in the gym prior to the injury. - Josh Tec
I love the intensity of the Portland, Oregon native, he talks junk to the opposition but can back it up. Singleton is a smooth shooter that can get hot. He has good size and handle, moves well without the ball and above all is a big-time shot maker. Singleton has that dog in him and we don’t see a lot of that lately. I think he will leave The Grassroots Showcase with more offers. He currently holds offers from NJIT and Portland. - Justin Byerly
The sophomore playing up with the 17’s showed that he belonged up an age group. Rickards broke defenders down and got to the paint consistently. He showed he can make shots from the perimeter and got to the foul line regularly. In transition, he changed direction on a dime and scored some tough baskets. In the Sweet 16 match-up on Saturday, he scored 18 points to help Loaded 757 advance here at The Grassroots Championship. - Justin Byerly
On their run to the 17U championship game, Antwan Wilson was one of the constants for Team BBC. The 6-foot-4 guard averaged double-figure scoring over the weekend and proved to be a switchable, versatile weapon on defense. He’s athletic and long with an ability to guard multiple positions and provide mismatch issues on offense. Wilson has some shiftiness to his attack and can shake a defender and get to the rack. He’s a two-way guy that showed that he has a knack for winning basketball games over the weekend. - Josh Tec
One thing we’ve come to love about Florida Pro is that they never have a shortage of dudes. Every weekend someone steps into the spotlight for them, and Koree Cotton was that guy in Virginia Beach. The 6-foot-5 guard was one of the most consistent, great players of the weekend. Cotton has good positional size, and he’s a great athlete. He uses his size to overwhelm on both ends of the floor. Cotton can knock down open shots from the perimeter, and he’s a terror when he’s going towards the basket. He helped lead Florida Pro on a run that nearly saw them in the Final Four. - Josh Tec
