Checking in with '23 Combo Guard RJ Johnson

6-foot-4 combo guard RJ Johnson has truly evaluated his stock to newer heights with his elite performance over the summer. On some of the biggest stages, Johnson was consistently recognized as a notable standout.

As the travel winds down, I checked in with RJ to see how the summer has been for him.

“It has been a great learning experience,” Johnson said. “My game has grown a lot playing against top players in the country.”

With his stocky size, he’s been able to capitalize on getting to the rim over smaller guards. Let’s not forget about his explosiveness to the basket.

Johnson’s passing game has progressed to another level; his court vision and perfect timing put his teammates in the right position to score.

Defensively Johnson has become more aggressive and has become a considerable threat to other teams as he’s been known to cause turnovers.

The Summer Grind

Johnson says his game has definitely taken a step forward this summer and his mindset to outwork everyone has gotten even stronger.

“My IQ and skill set have grown a lot,” he said. “It’s been a major change, from taking it more seriously getting in the gym, and just trying to do the best I can with the opportunity given to me.”

With current offers from LSU, Auburn, Jacksonville, Samford, FAU, Tennessee Tech and Wichita State, but has caught interest from some major schools.

He says Ohio State, Murray State, Alabama, Tennessee, Mississippi State, UNC Charlotte, and Virginia have reached out during the summer.

What’s Next for RJ?

Johnson’s next move is to continue playing harder than everybody else and show why he’s gotten this far.

“For my final season at Grissom, I want to lead my younger teammates to a championship and just start preparing for college,” Johnson added.

There’s no doubt as to what RJ can bring to the table, and with the exit of Cade Phillips, the debate should be over for who’s the number one player in the state.
