Previewing the 16U Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions

With the Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions tipping off on Friday, here’s a preview of the event and everything you need to know for the weekend. The event is loaded with talent from top to bottom. Here’s what to watch for this weekend…

TEAMS TO WATCH

Some of the South’s most talented teams will be meeting at Suwanee Sports Academy this weekend. Need the teams to watch? We have you covered:

Georgia Stars

Atlanta Xpress

New Orleans Elite

Southeast Elite (FL)

Q6 All-Stars

Southern Stampede

Elfrid Payton Elite

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Some of the top players in the country will showcase their talents this weekend. We will be watching, but here are some guys to keep an early eye on:

Ikey Obiagu, 2017 C, Georgia Stars: The 7-footer introduced himself to the national scene during the Jordan Brand International Game a few weeks ago. The rim-protector blocked seven shots during the game. Since then, the high school basketball world has been buzzing about Obiagu. He is the No. 2 ranked prospect in Georgia’s 2017 class. He’s a prospect you don’t want to miss.

Malik William and Wyatt Wilkes, Southeast Elite (FL): Southeast Elite (FL) is loaded in the 16U age group and while their guards get a lot of the pub, their pair of big men aren’t bad either. Malik William, a 6-foot-8 power forward, is a triple-double threat with his scoring, rebounding, and shot-blocking. He and stretch 4 man Wyatt Wilkes make quite the duo for the Sunshine State boys.

Devin Gilmore, 2017 SF, New Orleans Elite: Mississippi native Devin Gilmore may be one of the Deep South’s best kept secrets. The 6-foot-6 forward is a talented scorer and athlete. He had an impressive high school season and we look forward to seeing him this weekend at #Gibbons.

Rayshaun Hammonds, 2017 F, Atlanta Xpress: According to a variety of different people, Rayshaun Hammonds blew college coaches away during the initial live period in New Orleans a few weeks ago. He continued his good play in Louisville over the weekend, and it earned him his first scholarship offer from Georgia. Hammonds is one of the most versatile prospects in the event and will be a player to keep an eye on.

Charlie O’Briant, 2017 PF, Georgia Phoneix: There aren’t many players that have helped themselves more this spring than O’Briant. He has been a standout at a couple of Georgia Cup events and the rest is history. It will be fun to see how he plays against elite competition.

POTENTIAL MATCH-UPS TO WATCH

Tournaments only get better as the weekend progresses. Here are three potential matchups to watch out for in this class bracket style, winner-take-all tourney:

New Orleans Elite vs. Southern Stampede

Game Elite vs. Q6 All-Stars

Southeast Elite (FL) vs. River City Reign
