BCAT Team Camp and Top 100 Evals 2023

Two sanctioned events. The BCAT Memphis Team Camp and the BCAT Top 100 highlighted the past two weekends with some exciting basketball in the Volunteer State. College coaches arrived in masses for the two events. Here are some standouts who caught my eye with their efforts in either or both of the events, starting with the Class of 2023. Players will be listed in alphabetical order.

Grant Campbell,
Heritage (Maryville, TN)
2023
6'7 WF

Length and overt athleticism catch your eye immediately when viewing this prospect. He is very slight built and that was an issue at times on the interior and on the glass. He has amazing timing on the blocked shot and despite the lack of bulk is very good rebounding his position. He can score from the mid-range and his outside touch is workable. He is at his best in transition seemingly looking for the lob or finishing a missed shot with a flourish. His length again is astounding, he keeps balls alive with tips and has some moxy despite his frail frame. If he gets that body stronger, his length and sheer athletic ability will allow him to flourish at the correct level. His best basketball is still ahead of him as he has yet to define what position he will become on the court in the future.

Tylon Chatman
Haywood (Brownsville, TN)
2023
5'9 PG/SG

I kept hearing the chatter all around me from the coaches in attendance. This little lefty can simply put the ball in the hole. The more you watch his game the more you realize, yes this man is a bucket. His build is ultra slight, he is small, simple as that but he is tough and has an edge about him. His lefty stroke is deadly to very deep crevices of the gym, he can pull up on a dime and drain a shot or he can glide past you and make a difficult scoring chance at the rim. He finishes through contact, he draws fouls at a rapid pace and he likes to be the offside defender who gets deflections and steals because to him defense becomes offense. Do not underestimate him because of his lack of physical attributes, this kid is a killer and when he finds the right outlet he will be one that is coveted.

Kameron Clark
Houston (Germantown, TN)
2023
6'5 SG

How coaches love length. Let me tell you the ways. Clark catches your eye right off the bat with his length. In the drills he was impressive with his handles and his strides to the cup. He played well in the all the games at the Top 100 continuously showing more and more of his repertoire of skills. He can shoot from every level, he handles the ball and can run the show if needed at times. His shooting touch is solid and when he is in the flow of the game his decision making seems to be on point. He needs to stay engaged from start to finish and that will only enhance his overall production. I like his game when he is in attack mode, he showed out using that length as a problem for opposing ball handlers and snatching the board, leading the break and making the right play with the ball.

Landon Engles
Lebanon (Lebanon, TN)
2023
6'8 PF

There is so much to be said for a player who truly understands his role within the framework of his team. Play to your strengths they always say, don't try to do things that you cannot and be a valuable teammate. The progression this young man has made just since last year was astounding. He has grasp the reality of his role for this squad and has made himself into a recruit able player at the absolute correct level. His work on the glass has improved to the point where he can get some put-back scoring chances and even the occasional post entry to score. He has a short jumper that appears reliable and he keeps the ball high and starts the break admirably. He can guard in the post, his body still needs work of course but his effort and improvement were worthy of me mentioning him in this article. Wonderful young man who has the making of a monster senior season for his high school squad.

Devaki Garr
Ensworth (Nashville, TN)
2023
5'11 PG

Seems no matter the event, if I am in the building I gravitate to where I can watch Davaki Garr. I had the pleasure of watching him in the team camp with his high school where he truly shines and the Top 100 under different playing circumstances. He is a born leader, he runs the show, he starts the break and he finishes with either a blast to the rim, a sweet dime to an appreciative teammate or an open jumper after moving the ball crisply around the perimeter. He is so explosive, the fastest player in the state from end to end, most players don't like to be sped up, he relishes the challenge. His outside shot within the framework of the team game is true. He is always engaged on the defensive end of the floor, he is pesky and a wonderful straight-up on-ball defender; however, he is magical from the help side, with that quickness and determination. Whoever secures the services of this young man on the next level will be grateful...I guarantee it.

Jonovan Gillespie
Dobyns-Bennett (Kingsport, TN)
2023
5'8 PG

Some players just have an internal understanding of how the game is supposed to be played. They seemingly make the right decision with the ball almost every time down the floor. Gillespie is a gamer who is a coaches dream. Despite his small build, this kid is a winner at each and every level of the game. He can flat-out knock down the deep shot, he has the basketball savvy to use this gift to his advantage also with short dribble mid-range jumpers and quick forays to the bucket. He plays with his head up, he is always looking for open shooters or cutters and he attacks the open spaces in the paint like a veteran. He is engaged on the defensive end of the floor, he has some strength despite his lack of height and he knows how and when to use this advantage. He relishes the fact that opponents underestimate his skills because of his size and he happily makes them regret those decisions as his team is generally on the winning side of the ledger.

Jared Hall
Lebanon (Lebanon, TN)
2023
6'7 SG/WF

Coming into the two sanctioned events, Hall had a lot to prove. College coaches dotted the landscape at seemingly all of his games and watched intently as he showcased his myriad of skills. He has made strides with his effort being much more consistent and that has only enhanced his value. He has a very nice pull-up shot on the move and has really improved his shooting touch from deep. He exploded to the rim, especially on the baseline, finishing with a flourish over unmatched defenders. He has length and size that continue to be coveted by those that wish to have him join their ranks next season. He showed some explosive drives off the dribble especially in transition. He has matured with his body language and his overall effort without question. His game is continuously growing in the right direction as he moves up the national charts.

Caden Herron
Hillsboro (Nashville, TN)
2023
6'4 SG

Pleasantly surprised by the maturation of this young player at the BCAT Memphis team camps last weekend. He has grown to 6'4 but has maintained his ability to guard any position on the floor. He has length and quickness and showed some leadership skills for a talented but young squad. His offensive game came to him as needed, depending on the opponent and the game situation. He showed the ability to put it on the deck and finish or knock down some outside shots when the lanes became congested. He still needs to work on his body and continue to become a weapon off the dribble. I was so impressed with adaptability during the games, he went from playmaker to scorer to defender depending on he situation. That my friends is what they call basketball IQ.

Dalton McNew
Carter (Strawberry Plains, TN)
2023
6'2 PG

Don't you just love it when you see the light come on. When the rising senior finally understands his true role within the framework of the team. How he grasps the leadership role and becomes the player you wanted him to be since you arrived on campus. McNew is truly coming into his own as a leader, a player and a teammate. He showed a much more balanced offensive game, playing unselfish, defending with purpose and making himself the go to guy for his coach and his classmates. He was always blessed with the ability to score but now its within the offense. He is a crafty finisher who was really making some noise in Memphis before he turned his ankle that Saturday afternoon. I had seen enough of his upward mobility that I wanted to reward him with some kind words. Don't you let up. don't you take a step back, you have the ability to play on the next level.

Jaylon Moore
Boyd Buchanan (Chattanooga, TN)
2023
6'6 PF

Big kid has shown marked improvement since last season. He seems so much more comfortable in his skin and his production has risen because of it. He goes 6'7 and is impressive in the warm up line but he is bringing effort and production to the table now. Moore was a beast on the glass, he fights in the paint and is still learning the nuisances of the interior but his learning curve is trending the right direction. Offensively he has a ways to go, but he is capable of scoring on the block, his footwork is making strides and he gets the flow of the game as he is a solid passer from the post. His best basketball is still miles down the road but now I believe he wants to make that journey to see how good he can become.

Jamarcus Powell
Lausanne (Memphis, TN)
2023
6'6 SG/WF

"Who is that kid", they kept saying as he strolled into the games at the BCAT Memphis team camp. Powell, coming off an injury plagued junior campaign, was all the rage among those in attendance with his size and his power. He ran the floor with purpose and he seemingly had a hatred for the rim as he continuously smashed the poor metal ring with his jarring dunks in the half court and transition. His body is college ready and his lefty stroke is good enough that repetition in the gym will only make him a shooter that will complement that body and interior prowess. He is a good athlete with power and size, that can defend in the post or on the perimeter. He might could use a year of seasoning in the junior college or post grad ranks but if his effort and hustle stay on this path he will be a special talent in the near future.

E.J. Smith
East (Memphis, TN)
2023
6'2 PG

I like him more and more every time I see him. For two straight weekends I have observed him in two different elements of his growth. Playing with his high school squad in Memphis and in the more individual confines of the Top 100. Smith is a dynamic lefty guard with a really good feel for the game. He has a dependable shot that just needs some minor tweaking, such as quickening that release. He has decent size and isn't afraid to mix it up on defense. He really needs to work on using his right hand around the rim and watch the tendency to dribble to excess at times. He loves to compete and he has that Memphis swagger that gives him that competitive edge. I love his upside and his work ethic, so sky is the limit young fella.

Brock Vice
Houston (Germantown, TN)
2023
6'11 PF

Very impressive prospect who drew eyes from every corner of the facility. Large frame, great build, strong hands, sturdy lower body, fundamentally capable. Vice showed all the tools for a burgeoning big man on the next level. He can score over either shoulder, he uses his size to carve out position and he is masterful on the offensive glass. He keeps the ball high and makes a solid outlet. He runs the floor and is a capable outside shooter if needed. He plays hard, he dives for loose balls and he dares you to enter the lane for he will block your shot. He is versatile enough with his skill set to allow you to run half court sets through him or allow him to wander and knock down shots on the perimeter with the framework of your offensive.
