SUWANEE, Ga—They’re back! College coaches are back on the road, and recruiting season is about to pick up. As the weekend progresses, we should be seeing an influx of coaches from all levels come through Atlanta Jam, so this is when players should be locked in more than ever. I saw some guys start their weekends well. 

Let’s take a look at some of the notes I have from Friday night’s games.

An Emerging Name

BCB’s Julian Walker continues to emerge as a player that should be garnering attention from college coaches. During HoopSeen’s Tip-Off, I noted his shot-blocking ability. His defensive instincts are still what impresses me most about his game, but his ever-running motor is also a big-time check in the positive column. This guy’s an animal on the glass. 

Walker showed that his 3-point shot can keep developing into a bonafide weapon as he went 2/2 from the perimeter. He also made some plays off the bounce from the wing. I love the overall versatility played with to start the weekend. 

The 6-foot-7, long-armed forward led BCB to a weekend-starting win with 18 points, including multiple dunks that had me worrying about the strength of the rims. 

When I was talking with someone who spent time on a major staff, he just kept saying, “man, this guy can play.” He’s right. 

Another Big Outing 

Right after Julian Walker impressed in court 6, I walked over to court 7 to see another big play well. PSB Atlanta’s Amir Boyce put up 15 and 8 to start his weekend. The 6-foot-9 center was most impressive in his defensive communication. Bigs anchor defenses, and I love when they actively talk on that end of the floor. It goes a long way in my book. 

Boyce also proved to have a jumper in his bag. He hit a couple of 3-pointers early, which made the defense emphasize closing out on him. Boyce can put the ball on the floor well enough to attack those closeouts and get to the rim. 

Again, college coaches looking for size here’s a name for you. 

Silky Smooth

Team Brandon Knight’s Jayson Nixon was the smoothest scorer I saw on Friday night. With his tight, quick handle, he can shake other guards and rise up for his sweet-looking jumper. Nixon finished with 21 to lead Team Brandon Knight to a win to kick off their weekend. If he amasses a healthy list of offers sooner than later, I won’t be surprised.
