Best basketball on the horizon for Herb Jones
The Alabama Challenge has a great nucleus of young prospects to build around for the future. One of those prospects is 2017 Newbern (AL) Sunshine High School guard Herb Jones.
The sophomore is a promising young prospect that plays for his father at a tiny 1A school nestled in the country. Nevertheless, his play is attracting some attention, as his best basketball is ahead of him.
“UAB has offered me and Texas Pan-American is interested. Alabama was interested, too,” Jones told HoopSeen.com following one of his games on Saturday.
It is worth being noted that Jones’ older brother, Walter, is committed to Texas Pan-American as a 2015 prospect.
The younger Jones, a 6-foot-3 guard that can play both guard positions, had a good showing over the weekend in Montgomery. He has great length and versatility for a guard. They both help him to be an elite guy on the defensive end of the floor. He also is an unselfish passer and distributor. He likes both of those parts of his game.
“I think my defense and the way I play in the pick-and-roll is the best part of my game.”
Paired with his father and brother, the Joneses Sunshine reached the 1A state championship a few weeks ago in Birmingham. They would fall to a talented Scared Heart squad, but Herb felt like the season was a successful year for a small community.
“I feel like the season went great. We didn’t finish with the state championship like we wanted, but we fought for our community,” he explained.
Diante Wood and Kevion Nolan, both key players for Sacred Heart, are teammates with Jones with the Challenge. They have big plans for the AAU season and hope to accomplish a lot as a team.
“I want to get better, earn some more scholarships, and win the Peach Jam,” Jones said of his goals for the AAU season.
While Jones may be a nice prospect right now, his best basketball is on the horizon.
