Top performers from the Alabama Preview

The Alabama Elite Preview brought together some of the state’s best talent to compete under the same roof. The coaching staff was polled on their top players from the camp. Here are the nine players that distanced themselves from the rest.

Tracey Burnett, 2016 CF, Lee-Huntsville HS: Burnett is one of the most intriguing players the state has to offer. During the high school season, he patrols the post and does a terrific job. While he did that during camp, he also showed his versatility and talent from the perimeter. His size, toughness, and skills make him an intriguing look for college coaches. Burnett is an effective scorer and rebounder. He will add offers before long.

Triston Chambers, 2016 SG, Cold Springs HS: Chambers was one of the unanimous choices across the board from camp. The 6-foot-2 guard has a nice balance of skill and athleticism in his game. He showed off his shooting ability and unlimited range from the outside. Chambers won’t have a problem getting his shot off in college, as he already has a knack for creating his own shot. The junior will have a busy spring and summer with many college coaches hot on his trail.

Micah Fuller, 2016 PG, Bessemer City: Fuller was another shooter that always had the green light at camp. He filled it up from behind the arc with his shooting performance. The 6-foot guard also did a nice job of running his team and getting his teammates involved. Fuller was able to enhance his stock over the weekend.

Matthew Horton, 2016 C, Paul Bryant HS: No one did more for himself than 6-foot-9 big man Matthew Horton. Horton took advantage of the stage and proved he deserves to be recruited and mentioned as one of the top big men in Alabama. He competed and played at a high level each game and drill. The big man did a nice job of finishing around the rim, as well as running the floor and blocking shots. He played within himself and didn’t try to do too much.

Khalil Johnson, 2017 SF, Cleveland HS: This small town kid made the most of his opportunity, too. Johnson is a little bit of an unknown around the state, but after Saturday, the news will surely get out on him. The 6-foot-8 forward has great size and athleticism for a wing. The most eye-opening thing from him, though, was his shooting ability. In his first game action, Johnson connected on three straight three-pointers and made his presence known. Expect his recruitment to pick up heading into AAU season.

Myreon Jones Jr., 2018 SG, Huffman HS: One of the biggest surprises of the day came from freshman Myreon Jones, Jr. The 6-foot-1 guard can play both guard spots, but with his shooting ability, it’s hard not to like him as a shooting guard. Jones was one of the best shooters in camp, as he drilled a couple of treys each game. The freshman plays wise beyond his years. He is poised and has great pace to his game, and he thinks like a point guard. It should be fun to watch him mature over the next four years.

Rod Scott, 201 PG, Lee-Montgomery HS: Scott came out hot and with a lot to prove in his first game of the day. The 6-foot guard resembles Atlanta Hawks point guard Jeff Teague with his game. He understands how to run a team and make plays for his teammates. He made some great passes, while also doing a nice job of scoring for himself, too. It will be interesting to see where his recruitment goes this summer.

Carleton Williams, 2016 C, Carver-Montgomery: The Illinois native completed his first season in Alabama this year and won a state championship. Now, the 6-foot-9 big man could be on to big things during the AAU season. Williams had a good showing on Saturday with his length, versatility, and potential. He stills needs to add some weight and strength, but the big man can score around the goal and protect the rim. He also proved he could knock down some mid-range jump shots. He will be a player for mid-major and low-major programs to keep tabs on.

Javien Williams, 2016 WF, Woodlawn HS: The other unanimous vote amongst the coaching staff was Woodlawn High star Javien Williams. At 6-foot-3, Williams has great length and athleticism for a wing man. He is also wired to score the basketball. He put up big numbers all year during the high school season, and that translated to camp with some elite competition. Williams was arguably the best scorer in attendance.
