Fastbreak Friday: MAJOR visits on tap for this weekend nationally

If you’ve been waiting for a big recruiting domino to tip during the visit weekends, buckle up because this may be the first of several recruiting richter scale moments. A host of top-level prospects are taking important recruiting visits this weekend across the country. Could a wave of commitments be in tow? Let’s run through the important campus visitors to watch.

TOP DOGS ARE ON THE VISIT TOUR

As we start to see the recruiting board shrink week after week because of commitments, the need to lock up the top targets grows more and more important for college programs. Let’s look at some of the top overall players in the class of 2022 and where they are heading.

Big man Jarace Walker is now one of the three best available players in the class of 2022 nationally. The manchild from IMG Academy is one of the most important players to land in the class and his plug and play potential is enormous. LSU has been a player here for a while and the Tigers will have a chance to wow him this weekend as he makes his way to Baton Rouge. Four other schools will also have a crack at it - Alabama, Auburn, Texas and Houston.

A return back to the campuses he visited over the course of the summer, Kansas forward Mark Mitchell is back on the road again. This weekend he’ll head to Westwood. UCLA will have a chance to reconnect with the Bruins after a June visit. Kansas, Mizzou and Duke will also get a return visit from Mitchell.

We’ve kept our eye on the recruitment of Texas guard Anthony Black since the beginning and his recruitment has been one of the most fascinating ones in the nation. The 6-foot-7 guard from Duncanville HS will be in Fayetteville, Arkansas this weekend to spend time with the Razorbacks. He’s been to Oklahoma State and Georgia and has the likes of Baylor, Duke, Gonzaga and Kansas in tow, too.

Highly coveted guard Cason Wallace of Richardson, Texas will make his third official of the end of summer/beginning of fall. He’ll be in Knoxville to see the University of Tennessee. The Vols are getting him after trips to Kentucky and Texas.

It should come as no surprise that Kansas is a player for Prolific Prep big man Adem Bona. The Jayhawks always roster a manchid in the middle and Bona is this year’s top dog in that category. He’ll be in Lawrence for an official visit. Trips to Baylor, Kentucky and UCLA are all on the calendar, too.

Another top 20 national prospect is on the road again. Cam Whitmore will be at Villanova for the weekend with a trip to the school off the Main Line before. This weekend he won’t be alone. Texas riser Brendan Hausen will also be in Philly for an official visit.

CAMPUS OF THE WEEKEND: LOUISVILLE

The line of prospects visiting Louisville this weekend is long.

In town for official visits are: Tae Davis (A commitment from Indianapolis), Kaleb Glenn (a Louisville class of 2023 top 50 national prospect), Jared McCain (one of the best guards in the 2023 class and a player head coach Chris Mack spent a lot of time recruiting this summer), Rodney Rice (a top 125 player from DeMatha Catholic) and Dusty Stromer (one of the most versatile players nationally in the class of 2023 from California).

Unofficially Ayden Evans (an in-state 2023 big man), Maki Johnson (a top 75 national ’23 prospect), Damone King (an interesting class of 2023 Louisville prospect), Tyler McKinley (a rising class of 2023 prospect from Cincinnati), Lawrent Rice (a top 100 guard from Ohio), George Washington, III (another talented class of 2023 prospect from Louisville).

VISITOR OF THE WEEKEND

As is the case every week on Just a Minute, we highlight our Visitor of the Weekend. Texas native Coin Smith, who is now at AZ Compass Prep, is our winner for this weekend. The combo forward was outstanding last week in the first open practice of the season for college coaches to attend. Vandy head man Jerry Stackhouse was in the building for the workout. Smith will make his way to Nashville for the weekend.
