Fastbreak Friday: Georgia has star power in Athens, major visitors across the nation

College basketball prospects are climbing into planes, making the drives and doing the college campus visit thing this weekend. All across the country we are seeing the next wave of college basketball stars making important trips to gather intel before they make their college pick. In Fastbreak Friday, we look at the visitors of note.

VISITOR OF THE WEEKEND

Never count out the home team. In recruiting, the home state school is always an X-Factor in a decision for any prospect. Even as staying close to home seems to carry less value than ever before, the program that is right down the road or within the borders of the home state of a prospect, you have to keep them in the mix.

With that in mind, keep an eye on Arkansas and in-state stud Nick Smith. Sure, Kentucky is a major player here but the Razorbacks were in the mix with Smith long before the summer blow-up.

Smith, a Little Rock native, will be in Northwest Arkansas and taking in the campus and all of the action on Dickson Street this weekend.

CAMPUS OF THE WEEKEND: GEORGIA

Saturdays in Athens are held in sacred regard. Football afternoons are hard to beat in Bulldog country. After a big win over Clemson, UGA football is back at it again on Saturday with a game against UAB, margin the first home game of the season.

You better believe the UGA basketball program is taking full advantage. Texans Anthony Black and KyeRon Lindsay will be in town for an official visit. This is a major storyline in the hoops recruiting landscape. The Bulldogs haven’t had a serious star prospect on campus like Black since Anthony Edwards came to town before he committed to the Dawgs. Prior to Edwards, getting a visit from a 5-star level player was a rarity, especially outside of the traditional Bible Belt recruiting area.

Georgia head coach Tom Crean spent some good time watching Black at the Best of the South in downtown Atlanta during the July NCAA Live Period. New UGA assistant coach Wade Mason has Texas ties and has tapped into that pipeline for this big recruiting weekend.

The Bulldogs have come on strong over the last two months with Black.

Interestingly enough, Black and Lindsey were both in Stillwater, OK last weekend for an official visit with Mike Boynton’s Oklahoma State program. Black is also strongly considering Duke, Baylor, Kansas and Arkansas. Lindsey has trips planned to UNLV and Tennessee.

THE SEC ISN’T MESSING AROUND

Across the board, the SEC schools are putting in the work to get the best talent on their receptive campuses. Let’s take a look around the league to see who else is on the visit prowl.

Tennessee has some serious star-power coming to Knoxville. Brandon Miller, one of the top 10 prospects in high school hoops, is making his way to the land of the Vols. The Nashville native could go the pro route but Rick Barnes and staff are in there deep. Keep a watch on this one. Also in Knoxville is Jett Howard, a top 55 player nationally, and class of 2023 prospect George Washington III.

In Tucsaloosa, the Tide will play host to Florida wing Brice Sensabaugh. The high academic prospect has been a major target for coach Nate Oats and staff for a while now.

Down in Oxford, Ole Miss is planning on a big weekend. Class of 2022 big man Jalen Reed, class of 2022 guard TJ Caldwell of Texas and class of 2023 guard Isaiah West of Tennessee will be on campus.

MAJOR VISITORS WEEKEND NATIONWIDE

Jaden Bradley was in Florida State last weekend. This weekend, the North Carolina native at IMG Academy will be in Gonzaga.

Michigan State will play host to big man Jaxon Kohler from Utah and Southern Cal Academy.

Keep an eye on Virginia Tech. Two key targets are in Blacksburg this weekend. Big man Noah Clowney continues his visit tour and Florida stud Ven Allen Lubin makes a visit to the ACC school.

Jordan Walsh is the latest prep star to visit Arizona State. The bouncy forward from Texas is currently in Tempe. Staying in the Pac-12, USC will play host to South Carolina native Julian Phillips for an official visit.

Clemson will play host to Georgia native Chauncey Wiggins for an official visit. Another Georgian in South Carolina - Gaddis Heath to Charleston Southern.

North Carolina will play host to Virginia native Tyler Nickel.

JJ Starling will be on the campus of Syracuse. Daniel Skillings will be at Pittsburgh. Providence will play host to North Carolina big man Patrick Wessler.

Colorado big man Zach Keller will make a trip to Texas Tech for an official visit. He’s being courted by programs from all over the country. Arizona native Elijah Saunders is, too. This week he’ll be in Miami. He was at Notre Dame last weekend.

Denzel Aberdeen will visit Oklahoma. The Florida guard saw his recruitment skyrocket this summer.

My three favorite non-major visits of the weekend: Robert Jennings (SMU), Jack Payne (Idaho) and Marcus Cell (Bucknell).
