Top Overall Performers at the 2021 HoopSeen Best of the South Part: 1
ATLANTA, GA - The 2021 Best of the South is in the books and our staff has gone through nearly a week full of notes to compile our Best of series from the event. With over 500 teams this time around, The 2021 Best of the South was the biggest live period event for boy's basketball ever.
Today we take a look at the top overall performers from the event.
The North Carolina commit spent most of the weekend playing in front of his future head coach Hubert Davis or his future assistant coaches Brad Fredrick and Sean May. The skilled lead guard for Phenom University showed some rust and some jitters playing in front of coaches for the last first time but he calmed down and produced the rest of the weekend. When his shot wasn’t falling, he was getting into the lane and creating paint touches that opened the floor up. I think he will fit into North Carolina’s system from the get go. Just don’t expect the lightning-quick player that Tywon Lawson or Coby White were, Trimble is more of a Nate Britt style guard, a steady point guard that can lead a team. Britt went to two Final Four’s and won a national title at North Carolina. - Justin Byerly
Wyche was one of the most consistent players in this loaded event. The 6-foot-5 wing has extremely long arms and a ton of athleticism. Helping lead Florida Pro to a 6-1 record on the weekend, Wyche was the leading scorer. He impacted the game on both ends of the floor with a number of college coaches watching each game. His athleticism makes him a huge threat as he constantly plays above the rim. He can knock down open mid range jumpers and finish tough layups with either hand. His quick twitch muscles also allowed him to get easy buckets after grabbing an offensive rebound. Defensively, he flys in to block shots and uses his long arms to cause turnovers. Wyche has a chance to see his recruitment pick up this month. - Brianna Patton
Well, here we are again. The All-American level prospect from Texas finds himself at the top of our list of prospects, performers and players in a major event. There is a theme with him. He’s always in this space. The versatile prospect from the Dallas, Texas area is listed as a point guard and with his size this is what makes him intriguing to college coaches. He has the size to be productive in the paint and the skillset to handle the ball on the perimeter. Duke’s Head Coach starting next season Jon Scheyer along with assistant Nolan Smith. Tony Bennett, Hubert Davis, Tom Crean and more were front and center to watch Black during the opening game of The Best of the South on Thursday and coaches continued to evaluate at a high number throughout the weekend. - Justin Young
Monsengo is a man amongst boys when he’s out on the floor. The 6-foot-8 combo forward looks like he’s already built to succeed at the next level. His size and strength allows him to be a force on the boards and around the basket. He can step out and hit from the perimeter as well. Mosengo has offers from a host of mid-majors like UNCW, FGCU, USF, Iona and Akron. I’d be shocked if that list didn’t expand in a hurry throughout July. - Josh Tec
Any time Bond was playing, he was drawing a large crowd of college coaches. Here’s why - he’s one of the best interchangeable forwards in the field here at the Best of the South. Bond is a hard-playing, highly-athletic and smart four man that can guard the posts on the blocks and move his feet out to the wing as a stopper. Bond is one of the most athletic players we’ve seen at his combo forward position this season.His versatility is outstanding. You could make an argument that he was the best Swiss Army knife type of player in the event. Marquette head coach Shaka Smart was a staple at his games. So was Eastern Michigan's Stan Heath. Virginia head man Tony Bennett came by, too. - Justin Young
