Family Ties - UNC Hires Davis
The University of North Carolina has hired long-time assistant coach Hubert Davis to take over it’s men’s basketball program. He replaces Roy Williams who held the position for the past 18 seasons and won three national titles. The Carolina family tradition has tones of The Godfather and The Sopranos with their decision to never go outside of the Carolina family.
Born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina Davis has been the lead recruiter for the Tar Heels for some major signings. He was also on staff for two back-to-back Final Four appearances in 2016 and 2017.
The decision to retain Davis, who will more than likely be able to have all of the roster stay in tact besides some earlier transfers was a big factor going forward.
Davis has been on the North Carolina bench since 2012 as an assistant coach after a career in the NBA and working at ESPN as a college basketball analyst.
Many close to the program thought the new head coaching duties would come down to Davis and UNC-Greensboro Head Coach Wes Miller. Davis just turned 50-years old and will be in his first head coaching position.
Davis played at North Carolina from 1988 until 1992 before a 12-year career in the NBA.
