Wellstar Lake City Classic: Monday
ACWORTH, GA -- The finals are set for the Superior Plumbing bracket of the Lake City Classic. Getting to the championship game was not an easy task. And that meant the action was hard fought and fun to watch at Allatoona High School.
POPE SURVIVES AN ABSOLUTE BATTLE
In a battle of contrasting styles but equal parts effort, everyone that has watched Pope and Tri-Cities play knew the semi-final of the Superior Plumbing Bracket would be a dog fight.
And, boy, was it.
Pope built a six-point halftime lead and that served enough of a lead buffer to hold off a tough Tri-Cities club. The Greyhounds won 66-57.
Georgia College bound guard Chase Hutchins was terrific in the victory, scoring 27 points and grabbing 12 rebounds in the win. He was a bully to the rim and challenged every defender that Tri-Cities threw at him. Hutchins earned his keep at the foul line.
Running mate Garrick DeBowles, an Embry-Riddle signee, was also fantastic in the win. The all-gas, no-brake forward finished with 23 points and nine rebounds in the win. He's been one of the most consistent big men in Georgia this season and the biggest recruiting steal in the Peach State's 2015 class. He's been absolutely terrific in 2014.
Tri-Cities was no stranger to success. The 1-2 interior duo of Fred Callaway and Marquis Trice beat-up Pope in the middle. Callaway, a 6-foot-6 senior, was efficient in defeat, going for 14 points and 13 rebounds. Trice finished with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Pope will play Spain Park (AL) for the Superior Plumbing bracket championship.
1-2 SPAIN PARK DUO DOES IT AGAIN
This sentence will be written, read and said several times over the next three years: Jamal Johnson and Austin Wiley were really good for Spain Park today. The sophomore tandem combined for 37 of the Birmingham school's 69 points in win over North Cobb Christian in the semi-finals of Superior Plumbing bracket of the Lake City Classic.
Johnson was terrific, scoring 19 points and hitting jumpers all over the floor. The 6-foot-4 guard has put on a show here in Acworth over the course of two games. Johnson was also the catalyst on the glass for the Alabama school. He ripped down 12 rebounds and handed out five assists.
Wiley, a highly-touted big man in the class of 2017, had to work hard for his 19 points and eight rebounds in this one. NCC boasts 7-footer Trey Kalina, a Chattanooga signee. The match-up was and probably will be the best big man battle of the tournament. Kalina matched Wiley for size and length and did a good job of defending vertically.
Wiley eventually found his groove and played above his shoulders, scoring the chip shots and doing a better job of getting on the glass in the second half.
North Cobb Christian had good games from guards Jalen Dampier and Nicholas Fleming. Dampier finished with 16 points and Fleming had 15. the duo combined for five three-pointers.
GAINES SHINES AGAIN FOR PRP
How do you make an impression? By consistently producing. That's what 6-foot-5 senior wing Richard Gaines has done in back-to-back games for PRP. In a physical, wild and back-and-forth game, Gaines was terrific for his team as producer. He finished with 30 points, 14 rebounds, four blocks, three steals and three assists in a 78-74 win over Fayette County.
In the first round of the tournament, the athletic and wiry wing was on constant attack to the rim for PRP, scoring 21 points and grabbing 12 rebounds in a loss to North Cobb Christian. He was a nice surprise to start the day and certainly made his presence felt as he accounted for nearly half of his team's offense.
From a recruiting standpoint, Gaines is wide-open. There are some blips on the recruiting radar but nothing too concrete at the moment, he said.
PRP senior guard Khalid Raheem finished with 14 points in the win.
For Fayette County, senior guard Jamon Bivens enjoyed another productive day from the floor. He finished with 20 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals.
GLENN DOES WORK FOR CARROLLTON
Size. There was just too much of it around the rim for Harrison to handle as Carrollton beat the Hoyas 54-47.
Glenn, a Georgia Southern signee, scored 24 points and owned the paint. He also grabbed 14 rebounds in the win. His paint mate, Jerel Rowe, was also very productive. The long 6-foot-4 forward scored 13 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in the win.
Together, the post 1-2 punch was the difference maker for Carrollton. Harrison could never get past a seven-point deficit all game long despite a strong offensive effort by senior guard Ethan Weathers. The speedy point guard scored 19 points for the Hoyas in the defeat.
