In the last couple of years, the state of Georgia has become a very guard-oriented state, making a shift from the years when the state produced some of the best post players in the nation.
A team that is loaded with a few of those guards is the Laney Wildcats from Augusta, and the leader of those guards so far this year has been junior point guard Zep Jasper.
Laney has arguably played the toughest schedule out of anyone in the state, which has put Jasper up against other very highly touted guards in Kobi Simmons of Saint Francis, Tookie Brown of Morgan County, and Jared Harper and Ty Hudson of Pebblebrook.
“I feel like a belong up at the top with guys like that. I feel like we don’t get enough recognition in Augusta, Georgia, and I should be right up there,” said Jasper.
Those are words that Jasper has backed up with his play this season. He has come away with great performances in each of the games against teams in HoopSeen’s Power Poll and left a huge impression along the way.
Not only did that impression come from his scoring and ability to handle the ball and distribute, it came on the other end of the floor as well. Jasper’s defense has been nothing short of frustrating for opposing guards.
“I feel like that is one of the strengths of my game. I like to play defense, and it gets my game going and my teammates going too,” said Jasper.
The tough road for Laney is not even close to being over. They still have tough games, including a battle with Norcross on Saturday and other games against Jenkins, Morgan County, Buford, and Butler.
Jasper’s stock has already risen exponentially this season, but with the high profile games remaining on schedule, it only has more room for improvement. Be on the lookout Zep Jasper and the Laney Wildcats.
Jasper currently holds an offer from UAB with interest from a number of programs including Clemson, Baylor, South Alabama, George Mason, Gardner Webb, and Georgia Southern.
