The Tucker Topics: Nov. 20

With the signing period behind us and college basketball season in full swing, the recruiting part of the game will now be different. Now, coaches have to look for players to replace the prospects they missed on in the fall.

Coaches will be looking in several directions for players, whether it is an unsigned senior, a JUCO player, or a 2016 kid. All of that is included in this week's edition of the Tucker Topics.

MISSISSIPPI STATE STARTING EARLY

Since being hired at Mississippi State, Rick Ray and his staff have done an excellent job of identifying young talent and getting on them early. To this point, things have been working out, and that continued on Tuesday night.

2016 Gainesville (GA) shooting guard D'Marcus Simonds, one of Georgia's best perimeter players, announced his commitment to the Bulldogs. Mississippi State was the first school to offer Simonds, and he told our very own Justin Young that it was something that factored in to his decision.

Simonds chose the Bulldogs over the likes of Florida and Kansas State, among others.

Ray and his staff have also done a great job of nailing down the states of Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia. Tookie Brown, Joseph Strugg, and Quinndary Weatherspoon are all quality, underrated pickups for #HailState.

NOW TO PLAN B

Many schools lost on some big names that signed this week. Now, these respective schools have to move on to Plan B for the future.

A prime example is St. John's. The Johnnies spent years recruiting Isaiah Briscoe, only for Kentucky to come in and steal him away. Now, after years of hard work, Steve Lavin & co. have to find some new players to target.

They Red Storm moved very quickly, as they received a commitment from Samir Doughty, a 6-foot-3 guard from Philadelphia. Prior to his commitment, Lavin also offered Chicago's Marcus LoVett, who has seen his recruitment multiply since transferring in to the Windy City.

What other schools are now looking at Plan B?

I'd say Tennessee, UConn, Charlotte, and Clemson are some schools that will have to move quickly to replace some losses they had in the past week.

WINNER, WINNER!

It's easy to say that Kentucky and Arizona were winners during the signing period, but really, who were the big winners this fall? I have some for you.

1.) Charlotte:Yes, Charlotte did lose a big piece with Bryce Brown flipping his commitment to Auburn, but the 49ers also brought in a local talent that HoopSeen.com is very high on.

Ebuka Izundu, a 6-foot-10 big man, signed the dotted line and made his commitment to Charlotte official. Alan Major and his staff beat out several high-major programs for Izundu's commitment. On the floor, he will bring a great defensive presence, along with an offensive game that is improving. Charlotte was definitely a winner.

2. Texas A&M: Normally, the No. 3 ranked team in the recruiting class would be a no-brainer pick, but with Texas A&M, things are different. Billy Kennedy's 2015 class is monumental for the Aggies.

With Elijah Thomas, D.J. Hogg, Admon Gilder, and Tyler Davis in the fold, Texas A&M could flip some of the momentum in the SEC, with the Aggies definitely headed to the top. The only question now is, what will be A&M's encore class for next year?

3. Western Kentucky: Western Kentucky is adding some punch to their backcourt with the additions of Chris McNeal and Marlon Hunter. Both players have proved they can put up big numbers in a hurry, but they are also very active on the defensive end.

With McNeal and Hunter manning the backcourt for the next few years, along with JUCO guard Fredrick Edmond, the Hilltoppers will be tough to edge out on the perimeter.

GEORGIA WINS BIG

It's always hard to find a good big man that actually plays big, so when a program like Georgia adds a guy like Derek Ogbiede, it's important.

Ogbiede, a 6-foot-8 big man from Pebblebrook (GA), committed and signed with the Bulldogs on Wednesday, the last day of the signing period.

Georgia beat out Houston and a like push from Memphis for Ogbiede's services.

Ogbiede has a college-ready body and physical nature and strength will translate to the next level. He is a force on the defensive end, as he blocks shots and makes things difficult on the offense. He is also a very productive rebounder.
