Phenom Showcase: Saturday's action
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Phenom Showcase is in the books and after a long Saturday at Forsyth Country Day, we look back at the big storylines from Saturday's action.
MAKIN' THE CASE FOR BACON
We know this much about Florida native and current Oak Hill Academy wing Dwayne Bacon: He's uber-talented. He's going to Florida State. He's a likely McDonald's All-American. Everyone knows about him. None of that is debatable.
The opinions vary on Bacon and where he stacks in the class of 2015 though. He's a composite top 20 national prospect, according to 247Sports.com. He's in good company.
Bacon shot 12 of 15 from the floor and he did much of his work in the first half of an under-matched Forsyth Country Day team. Bacon did his 28-point damage in 21 minutes of time and only on 15 shots. He's a undervalued passer and he's proven himself time and time again as a playmaker. My old colleague Jerry Meyer compared him to James Harden. That's not a bad call.
The question becomes this - is he more of a top 15, maybe even top 10 level player? It is a debate worth having. The talent at the top of 2015 is very impressive. Bacon, who already is in the conversation, should be considered for the top 10 list this season. Here's a great debate for the Floridians - who's better, Bacon or Antonio Blakeney? Have fun with that one.
HIGH-MAJOR BIG MAN RACE
It is easy to see why Huntington Prep big man Thomas Bryant is the true center of attention in a three-school recruiting battle. The 6-foot-10 charismatic paint protector is down to Syracuse, Missouri and Indiana, he said.
The Rochester, N.Y. native been to all three schools officially but said he wants to watch how all three of his finalists play this season before he ultimately signs in the spring. He was clearly the best big man at the Phenom Showcase and there is a pro flavor to his game.
IZUNDU MOVING ON UP
We leave the ranking of North Carolina players to our friends at Phenom Hoop Report and as they look at their 2015 list, it will be interesting to see where they slot recent UNC Charlotte signee Ebuka Izunda on the senior list. He's moved up a class from 2016 and is now a senior at Victory Christian. Izundu, in our opinion at HoopSeen.com, is a no-brainer pick for the No. 2 overall player in the state behind Brandon Ingram.
Izundu, an effortless athlete with great length, plays to his 6-foot-9 size. He's smooth off the floor, incredibly smart as a rebounder and shot-blocker. He moves very well and has a basketball frame. There is very little forced effort. Offensively and defensively, he's a fine rebounder and a good scorer in the paint.
To give some context, if Izundu were in Georgia he would be the No. 3 senior in the state. From a national perspective, it wouldn't surprise me to see to see Izundu crack a top 100 list and should be, in all honesty, be considered for something above the top 75 line.
HI, MY NAME IS...
Perhaps the biggest high-major sleeper to come from the Phenom Showcase is class of 2016 forward Karim Ezzedine of Huntington Prep. The 6-foot-8 native of France can shoot from deep and is comfortable facing up in the midrange. Offensively, he's a point producer. He's a mismatch problem because of his great size for the wing. There's some bulk to his frame.
From a recruiting front, Ezzedine told HoopSeen.com that he has offers from Central Florida, Iowa State and Oklahoma State. He's a guy worth recruiting at the highest level and a prospect worth considering for the top 65 national space.
SLEEPING SCORER: JAYLEN FORNES
We've seen a lot of Word of God (NC) shooting guard Jaylen Fornes this fall. Every time the book on him remains the same: Why is he being under-recruited? No offense to the likes of Appalachian State, Florida A&M and Campbell, Fornes is a player that lower end high-major programs may want to give a long look at.
Consistency is huge in the evaluation game. In a world of sample-size viewings, Fornes has been good in multiple settings. He's a fine shooter with a pretty jumper. The ball comes out of his release quickly and he squares up beautifully. Fornes was the beneficiary of the wonderful play of teammate and future UNC Greensboro point guard Demetrius Troy, too.
Our friends at Phenom Hoop Report have Fornes at No. 12 overall in North Carolina's 2016 class. With all due respect, that's a bit too low. In our view, he's probably more of a top eight player in the state.
