There are those moments in a young prospects playing career that can be identified as the tipping point from being good and working on becoming great.

For class of 2017 point guard Matt Coleman, a recent trip to the USA Basketball Junior National Team mini-camp may have been his moment. Already talented, the speedy class of 2017 point guard from Norfolk (VA) Maury High School, Coleman played better than the rest of his positional peers at the South Central Challenge.

Coleman said the experience in Colorado Springs has certainly helped with his mental game.

"My country comes first. So, I had to go. That was a great experience. It helped me get better and it helped me understand what I have to do in order to make the U18 team," Coleman said. “USA Basketball was a great experience for me. I take that as an accomplishment, and it made me work harder because I want everyone to know this is real.”

His game is quite real, too. Blessed with great speed, no one could stay in front of him at the South Central Challenge. He attacked with purpose, ran his team and kept the opposition on their heels with his play. The lefty is a good shooter that takes good shots. It is easy to see why he earned an invitation to USA Basketball.

Coleman has already picked up a good number of offers from quality programs. He said Cincinnati, Connecticut, Memphis, Old Dominion, Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth and Virginia Tech have offered a scholarship. Coleman added North Carolina, Syracuse, Ohio State and Notre Dame are actively recruiting him, too.

Coleman was at Virginia Tech's homecoming weekend and has been to Virginia and Old Dominion unofficially.

While in no rush to make a recruiting decision, Coleman should be considered one of the most popular point guard prospects on the East Coast this high school season.
