Senior Showcase Spotlight: Alphonso Willis
One of the top performers at the Senior Showcase on Sunday was unanimously recognized as Grayson combo guardAlphonso Willis.
The athletic slasher was able to square his shoulders and get past defenders for easy finishes at the rim and also posted a couple highlight dunks once at the rack. In his final year as a Ram, Willis averaged 18 points and 6 rebounds and was a large part of Grayson’s run to the Class AAAAAA Elite Eight, knocking off defending state champion Wheeler in the first round.
North Oklahoma has offered Willis and he said that his recruitment really started to pick up as the season progressed. It had been a long time coming for Willis and the Grayson Rams, who had two other seniors at the Showcase in Austin Dukes and Hafeez Anifowoshe.
“Since we were freshmen we knew that [making deep playoff run] was going to happen. Everybody else was surprised, making a big deal out of it but we knew we were able to do that," Willis said. "Since we were freshmen that’s what we’ve been working towards. This summer the seniors really went hard and it paid off in the season.”
Willis’ mindset coming into the Showcase wasn’t to show off his explosiveness or his shooting to coaches, but a different approach to make a name for himself.
“I’m trying to do the intangibles. Boxing out, talking on D, just letting them know I’m there, not through my game but through other stuff,” he said.
Willis doesn’t have any visits planned but is hoping to make some in the future.
