Saturday's notes from 14U #Gibbons

Introducing Robert Cowherd

The Georgia Stars 14U team could easily pass the “eye-test” for an older age group due to the height of their roster. They’ve got depth across the board, but their momentum is carried in the backcourt. Robert Cowherd (pictured above) serves as the lead combo guard by alternating in his role as a primary ball handler, and a scoring threat on the wing. He had an incredible game this morning in a win over GME 2022 finishing with 28 points. He scores well from all areas, and he does it with a calm demeanor similar to a silent assassin. If a defender steps up, he’ll attack off the dribble for paint finishes or even for the mid-range pull-up jump shot. Give him space to shoot from beyond the arc and its “Hand down, man down”. Cowherd has an athletic upside for his age at his position, and he uses body well to create contact getting him to the free throw line.

Joyful Hawkins continues his impact on Day 2

After catching the attention of the HoopSeen staff on Day 1, Joyful Hawkins continued his impactful playing style on Day 2 of the Bob Gibbons TOC. Hawkins, a 6’7 forward, was strong in multiple areas. He sprinting the floor in transition giving him easy opportunities for both layups and dunks. He accepted his role as a rim protector on defense and swatted away shots from just about everywhere. Lastly, he was active on the glass and never seemed to miss an opportunity to compete for a rebound. As he continues to fine-tune his skill set, he’ll be a serious matchup problem for future opponents.

JE Elite succeeds behind guards Franklin and Brown

Savion Brown and Tennile Franklin carried the scoring load for JE Elite in their two wins today over Upward Stars York County and SBC. Brown ran the point for JE Elite, but he took advantage of his shooting ability allowing him to average 14 points between the two games. He connected for a total of 5 three-pointers for the day while also showing a good shooting touch in the midrange area. Franklin took the role of a wing player in which he fearlessly drove to the basket for layup attempts around the rim. When he got fouled, he made sure to convert his opportunities at the free throw line. He averaged 12.5 points between the two games.

Additional noteworthy takeaways

J’Mariyae Robinson of GME 2022 had 20 points in a tough loss to the Georgia Stars and 18 points in a win over Elite Strong(Black). Robinson is a guard who headlines the charge for his team, and he’s a fierce competitor on both ends of the floor. He’s a player who will do whatever it takes to get a bucket. He excelled off the dribble in attacking the basket, but also showed his ability to knock down the open jumpers.

Ashton Latta(Upward Stars York County) and Caleb Richardson(Deep South Blue Devils) made their claim as two of the better three-point shooters today in the 14U division. They each had a 14-point performance in which twelve of their total points came from 4 made threes.
