Team Athens claims 15U
It’s Championship Sunday here at Suwanee Sports Academy and we’ve got a 15U match-up that has kept us on the edge of our seats.
Team Athens and Game Elite have both dominated their opponents throughout the 2014 Georgia Cup, however these two contenders have made it evident that they have absolutely nothing to lose.
Both teams have been defensively relentless, energetic and physical. Team Athens and Game Elite continued to put tight full-court pressure on one another from start to finish.
From the beginning of the ‘14 Georgia Cup, QuenJarvis Hall (PF/C) led Team Athens in points nearly every game. Hall averaged 17.3 PPG in pool play and continued to showcase his athleticism in the Championship.
While attempting to avoid the risk of injury for the future star, coaches for Team Athens limited Hall’s playing time. Despite his spotty visibility, Hall still managed to assist his team by producing a solid 14 points and multiple rebounds. Hall’s ability penetrate the lane at will, his dynamic scoring capabilities and high-energy defense (and all around hustle) led him to his rightful title as 15U MVP.
Hall’s teammates, Xavier Jackson, stepped up to play in the final round and led his team with 15 points. Jackson logged significant PT throughout the tournaments entirety and came off the bench with vengeance against Game Elite. Agility, ball movement and clear vision of the court allowed Jackson to lead Team Athens in the Championship with numerous key assists, a game-high 15 points and added to the list - vigorous defense. Throughout the series, Jackson averaged a consistent 10.6 PPG and proved to be an effective utility player for Team Athens.
Entering the fourth quarter, Game Elite started to hack away at their point deficit and took advantage of Athens’ half-court press. At this point Athens just wanted to contain Elite and maintain their lead, however this task was more than they bargained for.
Game Elite’s dynamic-duo, Rodney Lewis Jr. and Raphael Rogers, came out of the woodwork and quickly regained a their position on the scoreboard. Rogers and Lewis were always two of the top players on the court, no matter who their opponent was.
In a last-stich effort, Game Elite tried to turn things around by cutting Athens lead to 10 with just under three minutes left in regulation. Unfortunately, it was too little too late for Game Elite.
Team Athens started to pull away and Elite seemed unable to get their shots to fall. After battling and matching field goals for the remaining two minutes, time soon became the determining factor in the game. With time on their side, Team Athens inevitably secured their 2014 Georgia Cup Championship trophy.
