Georgia Stars Take Gibbons TOC 16U Title
A rematch of the 16U title game from a couple of years back, this year's Gibbons Tournament of Champions 16U title game pitted the Georgia Stars against the Upward Stars.
Both teams made it to the championship through a steady balance between their guard play and frontcourt play. The Upward Stars got off to an early start, sparked by guard Mikey Dukes and his ability to get to the rim. However soon after jumping out to an early lead, they saw the Georgia Stars names start to assert themselves.
Forward DJ Burns got the Stars going in the first half with some offensive rebounds and put-back buckets. Wing Marcus Watson soon joined in on the festivities with a few electrifying baskets of his own. Down the stretch it was more of the same, with the two forming an inside-out combo that became too overwhelming as the Stars came out on top 72-67. Watson led the way with 26 points and Burns added 20. Matthew Kormylo led Upward with 15 in the loss and Mikey Dukes tallied 13.
The Georgia Stars have quickly turned into a very good 16U team despite coming together late.
"We just come to practice ready to work hard and get to know each other on the floor. Then at the events we spend time together and have team bonding outings so that we can build a relationship and trust with each other," DJ Burns said about the group.
They are definitely a 16U team to keep an eye on for the rest of the summer.
