Simonds receives first scholarship offer

D'Marcus Simonds of Buford High School is one of the many talented wing players in Georgia's loaded 2016 class. The 6-foot-3 guard is unique in a sense by comparison to his classmates - he has a high-major offer already.

Mississippi State was the first school to offer the sophomore a scholarship and the moment, Simonds says, was pretty special.

"I was speechless," Simonds said. "It was crazy."

MSU head man Rick Ray offered the scholarship in a phone conversation last month and Simonds said he liked what he heard.

"He told me he feels like I can come in and make an impact right away so that's why he wanted to offer me a scholarship," Simonds said. "I just sat there smiling."

Simonds said UNC Charlotte, Houston, Georgia and Georgia Tech have all been in to see him this season. He's not content though. Simonds said he knows he'll have to continue improving to earn the attention moving forward.

"I feel like I have to just keep working. I can't take a back seat in this class," Simonds said. "There are good players in (the class of 2016) like Josh Langford and guys like that. I have to keep working and keep playing well so I can be recruited just as much as they are."
