Forecasting the AAAAAAA region tournaments

The madness is here for the Georgia high school basketball post-season. The region tournaments tip off this week across the Peach State and the seeding for the state tournament is on the line.

This is where the fun really begins.

The mega class is in it’s first year in AAAAAAA and you better believe teams are ready for the battles ahead.

CLASS AAAAAAA REGION CHAMPION PREDICTIONS FROM JUSTIN YOUNG

Region 1: Tift County
Region 2: Pebblebrook
Region 3: McEachern
Region 4: Cherokee
Region 5: Lambert
Region 6: Collins Hill
Region 7: Norcross
Region 8: Newton

WHICH REGION TOURNEY IS THE DEEPEST?

Region 6-AAAAAAA. The Gwinnett County region has seven teams. Six of them have winning records. That’s the most of any region in AAAAAAA. Collins Hill is the No. 1 seed and that may help in the seven-team region.

That said, this is anyone’s game. Two very state-worthy teams won’t be moving on to the biggest stage in Georgia.

WHERE CAN YOU EXPECT THE FIREWORKS?

This one is easy. Region 2-AAAAAAA. Westlake has beaten Pebblebrook twice and Wheeler once. Pebblebrook has beaten Wheeler twice.  Wheeler has beaten Westlake. Round and round we go.

All three teams started the season in national polls. But the trio have a combined 50-23 record on the season. Fourteen of the combined losses have come to an out-of-state team.

Westlake is the No. 1 seed in the region, meaning Pebblebrook and Wheeler could meet again in the semi-finals. The loser of that potential game would be a No. 3 seed in the state tourney and would play on the road in the first round of bracket next week.

The fate of the entire AAAAAAA state tourney could be impacted be the outcome of this ridiculously talented region tournament. The region tourney starts on Tuesday at Wheeler.
