Casey Morsell forges his own path
The St. John’s College High program reached high mark success on the hardwood last winter by reeling in the WCAC championship thanks to the play of Anthony Cowan. Now that the lead guard is suiting up for the Maryland Terps this college basketball season, new faces have entered the fray at the DC powerhouse. On Saturday afternoon at the National Hoops Festival, Casey Morsell began his story as a well watched and worthwhile college prospect.
Entering his sophomore campaign in the backcourt at St. John’s College, the 6-foot-2 guard showed off excellent playmaking abilities to go along with good size out on the perimeter. However, it is Morsell’s scoring prowess that stands out immediately, something that was on display on the floor at DeMatha. Not lacking for confidence or efficiency, the steady sophomore exploded for 20 points on the scoreboard off of eight-of-nine shooting from the field.
Knocking in a variety of shots, jumpers that came out of the standstill variety and from off the bounce, Morsell is someone that can get his shot within the confines of his team’s half-court offense, or whenever the shot clock is winding down. Not an explosive athlete but rather a smooth glider to the basket, the innate maturity and pace out of the intriguing talent out of the DMV is evidently clear.
Following his outing, Morsell, who is the younger brother of Towson star guard Mike Morsell, gave insight on what his sibling has passed down onto him. “He just tells me that the college game is more effort and intensity,” the product of the Team Takeover travel program said. “In college, everybody is good so you just have to find a way to stand out.”
Already, the likes of Towson and Binghamton have dished out an offer to Morsell as others, such as South Carolina, James Madison, and St. Joe’s, have begun to show some sort of attention. In the meantime, look for Morsell to further his bond on the perimeter with emerging 2018 guard Tre Wood and create a dynamic perimeter punch in hopes of adding another WCAC title to St. John’s in the months ahead.
