Luguentz Dort on the brink of national stardom
On the cusp of a national break out, Luguentz Dort once again showed what makes him such a solid college prospect during his time at the Charlotte Hoops Challenge this past weekend. While he was kept out of his first contest of the event with an injured foot, the 6-foot-4 scoring guard hit the floor at Rocky River High to cap things off where he displayed vast upside, versatility, and major production on the hardwood.
A native of Canada suiting up for Conrad Academy this fall, the school’s first year running, Dort has settled in nicely playing alongside premier talent including five-star big man Austin Wiley, something that he has enjoyed to date. “It has been pretty good. We have a lot of great players from all around the world and it has been nice having the same coach as last year (Shaun Wiseman). It has been much easier for me now even though we have only played four games so far.”
Dort, a rock solid scoring guard with the body that is more than capable of suiting up on an NBA floor already at the time being, showed off a much improved perimeter jumper in Charlotte. While he didn’t hit as often as he might have liked, the Brookwood Elite product did score with efficiency as he got to the basket and finished with explosive dunks and hard-nosed conversions.
Finishing with 23 points, six rebounds and five steals in his team’s second win over the holiday weekend, Dort continues to cement his standing as a top-25 recruit out of the 2018 class. The fact that he can rebound the ball like a big man, playmake and facilitate like a lead guard, but score it like his team’s primary scoring weapon, it can only equate to just how valuable the 6-foot-4, chiseled and strong bodied guard, really is.
On the recruitment front, things have begun to heat up as it is on the brink of becoming a prioritized one by the high-major realm. “It has not been bad,” Dort said about the schools beginning to show attention. “I just got two offers from UNLV and St. John’s last week. It is getting better and better every time.”
While Dort has not been able to get out to as many schools as he might have liked, he did visit Florida and Louisville this past fall, two schools that he seems to be favoring. “The Florida visit was pretty good. I like the team and the area and they have good coaches. They’re working on their arena so it looks good,” the five-star recruit stated. “Louisville has a good facility with a great coach; he is a hall of famer. I got to hang with VJ King and Donovan Mitchell so it was really good.”
Outside of Louisville and Florida, it is two other schools that Dort feels have laid down the greatest groundwork with him. “I probably speak with Baylor and Oregon the most,” he stated. Oregon, a program that has done phenomenal work in recent years with Canadian talent, seems to have piqued the eye of the Conrad star. “I can’t wait go up there and see how it is. I grew up with Chris (Boucher). I like how they play, too. Coach Mike (Mennenga) came and saw me a month ago.”
There is still is some time before Dort’s recruitment begins to get cut down but for the foreseeable future, expect for some of the top programs to jump on board with the super talented and physically gifted scoring guard as he continues to put up giant numbers on the final box score.
