Curtis Haywood II has his breakthrough

Now that the early signing period has come to a close, there is still a bevy of top flight college programs on the look-out for one or two more pieces to add to its cupboard of talent from the 2017 class. On Saturday at the National Prep Showcase, displaying elite length, good athleticism, and a penchant for making perimeter jumpers, Curtis Haywood II showed out and in a major way.

Leading up into the prep season, Brewster Academy head coach Jason Smith has raved about the work that the Oklahoma transplant had done during the team’s practices this fall. In Connecticut, the 6-foot-5 swingman parlayed his coach’s talk into a breakout performance.

Hitting on half of his field goal attempts and making five perimeter jumpers, some out to the 22-foot mark, Haywood showed many dimensions to his skillset. He rebounded the ball with a purpose as he corralled seven in all from off of the perimeter, defended multiple positions within the half-court setting, and even dished out four assists while turning it over just one time.

On such a stage as the National Prep Showcase allots and with a slew of college coaches in attendance, expect for the senior wing to see his stock explode this weekend.  “Right now, I just have offers from Tulsa and Georgia Tech,” Haywood stated. “Tulsa offered back in the fall and Georgia Tech just offered me last week.”

Others such as Arkansas, Indiana, George Mason, Siena, and Illinois have also reached out but with just two offers in hand and with the wide-spread production skills at Haywood’s fingertips, things look like they are primed and ready to take off in the weeks ahead.
