Commitments of the Week: Maryland & Coastal Carolina secure immediate contributors

The first signing period is here. With less than two days until those from the senior class can put pen to paper, we take a look back on the commitments that were received the past few days out on the recruiting trail.

Things have died down considerably where a good amount of talent from the 2017 class has already found a home for next year. Still, a few others came off the board this past week as Maryland came away with the top in-state recruit and Coastal Carolina snuck one out of the state of Kentucky again, as each earned the commitments of the week within their respective realm of play.

POWER CONFERENCE COMMITMENT OF THE WEEK

DARRYL MORSELL STAYS HOME, COMMITS TO MARYLAND

Much has been said all offseason long about the need for Melo Trimble, Maryland’s star point guard, to step up this college basketball season and get out of the funk that he had found himself in for most of last year. Expecting a more efficient Trimble in the coming months and for an early departure following the season, Maryland was in need for someone that could help fill his spot in the backcourt but also do a variety of things out on the perimeter. This past week, the Terps found that exact guy in Darryl Morsell.

A top breakout performer from the travel season this past summer, the 6-foot-4 guard is the best in-state recruit that the Old Line State has to show for itself. Attending Mount St. Joseph High School, located in Baltimore, Morsell is someone that can step right in next year and bring immediate athleticism, toughness, and a great talent base that should allow for him to grow into becoming a solid producer in whatever role he is given in College Park.

Beating out the likes of Dayton and Notre Dame for the top-60 guard, Morsell’s commitment gives Mark Turgeon’s program a top-25 group nationally, and a top-three class within the Big 10 entering the first signing period on Wednesday.

The departure of Melo Trimble, that is if he opts for the NBA following his junior campaign, is going to sting some, but landing Morsell was warranted and the idea of combining the ever-improving guard with current freshman Anthony Cowan in the years ahead, it sure does seem that the Big 10 gang is on solid ground in finding further success on the playing floor.

NON-POWER CONFERENCE COMMITMENT OF THE WEEK

TONY JACKSON COMMITS TO COASTAL CAROLINA

This time of the year, many of the power conference programs and name brand schools get all of the publicity and talk with how their 2017 classes might be looking. However, we would be doing a giant disservice here if we didn’t look back at some of those a level below and give credit to a program like Coastal Carolina this week, a group that went to the Bluegrass State for the second time this fall by landing an excellent weapon out on the perimeter, 6-foot-4 wing Tony Jackson.

Jackson, a well-built wing that can play both spots off of the ball on the perimeter, is built like a linebacker and is more than capable of taking a pounding on the playing floor. He actually enjoys the contact as he brings a blue-collar mentality to the hardwood along with an evolving skillset from 20-feet and in.

Not an explosive athlete, Jackson is someone that can still score through the body at the basket but where he finds himself best served is off of the catch from deep. He has polished is jumper in recent years and has become a consistent producer on the stat sheet when looking at his rebounding numbers and final output on the scoreboard.

Programs like Eastern Kentucky, Northern Kentucky, Illinois State and VCU were all involved with the North Hardin High product at one point in time. That still is a bit of a disservice to Jackson where he remained under the radar all summer and fall long and should have seen a highly tracked recruitment. Regardless, Jackson is an excellent coup for the Sun Belt gang. Add the 6-foot-4 wing with super talented and high upside senior commit Jaylen Sebree, a travel teammate of Jackson’s on the Louisville Magic 17-under squad, and it is evident that Chanticleers are the owners of the commitment of the week from the non-power conference rung.
