Covington's emergence leads Spartans over Lions

NORCROSS, GAGarrett Covington picked the right time to have a career game.

The 6-foot-3 sophomore guard put together a strong effort for Greater Atlanta Christian in a 71-54 win over Luella during the fifth annual GAC/Blue Collar Basketball Showcase on Saturday.

“Garrett stepped up for us tonight,” Spartans coach Eddie Martin said. “I’m not surprised. He has the ability. Now he has to be a threat.”

Covington took the opportunity to make the best of his time on the court. After not getting into any rhythm in the first half, he erased the mediocre performance ad proceeded to heat up in the second half. Things started on the defensive end where Covington just jumped into the open intercepting a few passes.

His confidence and effort carried over onto the offensive end of the floor. He knocked down open shots and finished at the rim. Covington had the Spartans faithful and bench excited about his performance.

“I had to erase my memory about the first half,” said Covington, who finished with a career-high 25 points to go along with six rebounds, four steals and two assists. “I had to contribute to the team.”

Normally, the contributions are left up to Virginia signee Isaiah Wilkins. The 6-foot-7 has carried most of the lost this season. He was no different this game. Wilkins was his normal self statistically against the Lions finishing with 21 points, 13 rebounds, three assists and two blocks.

The Lions came out roaring in the first half, though. Luella jumped out on the Spartans, who are ranked No. 2 in the Hoopseen Power Poll. Doral Moore led the charge on both ends of the floor. The seven-foot junior played like a player possessed scoring inside, running the floor and rejecting shots.

Temarcus Blanton, a South Carolina signee, contributed to the first half effort. The senior was active and played with his trademark relentless style. However, the duo struggled to help get the Lions through the Spartans comeback. Moore finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Blanton chipped in with 18 points and seven blocks.
