Byrd ready to bring winning resume to North Georgia
Jesse Byrd won a lot of games over the spring and summer with his Aim High teammates. Now in his senior season at Whitefield Academy, the point guard is hoping to fine tune his skill set even more in order to continue his tradition of claiming victories at the college level.
Byrd committed to North Georgia on Sunday, giving the Peach Belt Conference program a winner on and off the court.
Byrd took an official visit to the school at the start of the month and saw enough to make the decision on the school tucked away in Dahlonega.
"The coaches have been there for a long time. When I went on my visit, it was a real homely feel. I've never been there before and it just felt like home," Byrd said. "They have a good business management program and that's the major that I was looking for."
UNG gets a heady point guard that understands where his value is at. He liked what he heard during the recruiting process about his role for the Nighthawks.
"They said I can come in and be a leader right away," Byrd said. "They think I can come in and be an on-the-ball defender and I think they are trying to evolve their program from being offensively known to having good defenders on the team. I think I can help them out on the defensive end."
Byrd hopes to end his high school career with a state championship at Whitefield Academy this year before competing for PBC titles.
"Being a winner is a mentality. In practice, you may have guys that play for each other. But when the lights come on and you play in front of everyone, that could change around. I think I'm one of the kind of players that doesn't change. When it is game time, I think I'm one of those players that will do whatever it takes to win," Byrd said.
"I'll play a whole game and take three shots the whole game. If I'm not open and I don't think that shot will help us win, I won't take it. Basically, I will do whatever it takes to win."
