One of the top breakouts of the summer of 2016, if not the premier one at that, Darryl Morsell has brought in quality offer after quality offer. While he was somewhat of a known name back in the spring as he was tracked by some of the high-majors nearby, it was his time spent on the floor in July, when the college coaches were able to get out and see how much better the Team Melo guard had gotten, that had some of the top programs jump on board with the Baltimore native.

A giant play maker that is best with the ball in his hands, the 6-foot-4 guard brings great size and strength to his spot on the floor. He rarely ever plays outside of himself and because of his feel, pace, and IQ for the game, the Mount St. Joe’s product tends to make a lot of the proper reads and plays. His decision-making is on point and while he still must get better at shooting and hitting the outside jumper, Morsell has a go-to, two-dribble pull-up off of the top of the key but added with his deceptive athleticism at the basket and versatile defensive skills, Morsell has the makings of a top-100 type of recruit with further upside to him.

After traversing throughout the nation in July and sifting through the recruiting process in an efficient manner, Morsell is down to a final five, a group that lists Notre Dame, Dayton, Virginia Tech, Maryland, and Villanova. The Team Melo product gave his thoughts on each of the finalists and why each school made the cut.

Notre Dame

“Their academics are top notch and the degree holds a lot of value. Also, I like how they let their guards play and they did just put two guards that play similar to me into the NBA.”

Dayton

“My relationship with their coaching staff is great. They have been recruiting me the longest out of any of these five schools and they feel that I can come in and make an impact right away.”

Virginia Tech

“Coach Buzz (Williams) has a vision and says he wants for me to be a part of it. He often talks about being a part of building something is more special than going to a school that is already established. I just think he has a lot of energy and they will be good in the years to come.”

Maryland

“It is my hometown school. “I grew up watching them and Coach Turgeon and Coach Bino (Ranson) says they have a plan for me and I am the type of payer they need in their program.

Villanova

It is a guards dream school. That is what they produce and at a high level. They’re the defending national champs and they want me to come in and continue what they have and compete for championships every year.”

After visiting Villanova last week for an unofficial visit and heading to Maryland on August 20, with another being planned to Virginia Tech in the coming weeks, Notre Dame is the first program to solidify an official visit date with Morsell, a trip that will commence on September 17.  In the meantime, expect for all of those involved to fight for an official visit with the DMV recruit where a commitment could come at any time, or could be put off until the winter, whenever the time feels right.
