Dunmeyer sets tone to lead Tigers
If you do not know who Jon Dunmeyer is just yet, don’t worry you will soon enough.
The senior guard is taking the 2013-2014 season personal. Any time he steps on the floor he is driven to leave it all out there and get noticed.
In Tucker High’s season-opener, Dunmeyer helped the Tigers to a 60-55 win over Luella at the Verizon Hoop for the Cure on Saturday. It was a matchup that attracted the attention of several college coaches and Dunmeyer took advantage of the situation.
He attacked the rim with purpose and sliced through the Lions defense with ease. Whenever he wasn’t doing that he was knocking down jumpers. After his 28 points and five assists performance was enough to leave everyone in attendance asking about Dunmeyer.
“I have to play hard to prove myself,” he said.
Tigers’ coach James Hartry was a little more specific about Dunmeyer, an unsigned senior.
“He’s playing with a chip on his shoulder,” he said. “He has that attitude in him. He has that killer in him.”
Dunmeyer’s motivation comes down to being overlooked. Now that National Signing Day has passed with players securing their collegiate future, he feels like he’s getting overlooked. Any time Tucker steps on the floor, there is a chance a college program will be in the building or at practice. Dunmeyer wants to make sure he does not go unnoticed in the process.
“I used this as an opportunity to put myself out there,” he said.
Dunmeyer’s had the opportunity to match scoring against Luella’s Termarcus Blanton. The South Carolina signee tried to keep the Lions in the game with a solid second-half effort. Blanton was hard to stop on every possession late in the third and through most of the fourth quarter. His 24 points led Luella.
“We didn’t have an answer for No. 1,” Hartry said. “That is a good ball player and that is a good team we just played.”
Well, Tucker also came into the game looking to stop Luella 7-footer Doral Moore. The Tigers did an exceptional job keeping him out of the game and in foul trouble. Moore finished with four points and four fouls.
“We knew coming in we knew he had to play a 7-footer,” Hartry said. “We knew we had to go at him.”
Tucker accomplished what it was set to do as did Dunmeyer.
“This s a good way to start the season.”
