Beasley takes big visit tour
Malik Beasley and his father have logged a lot of miles in the family car this month. The class of 2015 guard from St. Francis has been on an unofficial visit tour and taking in some of the schools that are actively recruiting him.
The 6-foot-2 guard made a four school visit trip to Virginia to see UVa, George Mason, Richmond and Virginia Tech. Last weekend, he traveled to Oxford, Mississippi to see the SEC school and take in the Texas A&M football game.
The trip was a collection of first. It was his first visit. He saw his first college practice in person. He experienced his first major moves in his recruitment. Beasley said he was pleased with what he saw every step along the way.
The Hoos of Virginia had first crack and the 6-foot-2 guard was impressed.
"(Seeing UVa) was the first visit ever for me so that was a big deal," Beasley said. "We saw the town and the basketball facilities. It was pretty awesome."
After spending a lot of time with UVa assistant Ron Sanchez, Beasley and his father travelled to George Mason to see the new A-10 program.
"I go to St. Francis so I'm used to the smaller type of schools. It was kind of cool to see they had the smaller classes there," Beasley said. "Coach (Paul) Hewitt gave us a tour. It turned out pretty cool. It was great. My dad and (Coach Hewitt) laughed a lot. That's always a good sign."
From there, father and son went to Richmond to hang out with the Spiders.
"Their campus was beautiful. They have a lake right in the middle of it. They are finishing up on a new arena. It was awesome," Beasley said. "Coach (Chris) Mooney and his assistants showed us a lot of respect and interest in me. I spoke to a lot of their players and they were really cool."
A stop at Virginia Tech wrapped up the trip and saw the Hokies up close and personal.
"We saw basketball practice there and a football game there. It was really cool," Beasley said. "They are way more intense than it is in high school. I'm going to have to prepare myself for that."
All of the schools minus Virginia have offered him, Beasley said. On the drive home to the North Atlanta suburbs, Beasley said he and his father had a chance to do a visit inventory.
"We learned how the strength an conditioning coaches prepare players for the future. The coaching staff will be there the yeas I'm going to be there. The school, the tradition and stuff like that. We compared and contrasted a lot of that," Beasley said.
Last weekend, Beasley was at Ole Miss and saw the Rebels play Texas A&M. He added a trip to Tuscaloosa for the Alabama-LSU game is also on tap.
Beasley said he also has scholarship offers from Florida Atlantic, Samford, College of Charleston, Northeastern, Louisiana Tech, Rice and Georgia State.
