Kyle Sandy's Georgia Cup IV Friday Notebook
The Georgia Cup series is winding down as installment No. 4 opened up on Friday night, but that hasn’t stopped some teams and players from making some late impressions. 17U and 16U teams took to the floor at Norcross High School.
In Game 1, Elite Playmakers earned a hard fought 66-62 win over Heat Check. Arealious “Zeek” Copeland and Rodrick Rapley, two Alexander Cougars, came up big. Both scored 19 apiece with Rapley hitting the go-ahead bucket on a step back jumper from the top of the key with 11 seconds remaining. He and Copeland make for a strong backcourt that has a chance to make some noise next season for Coach Jason Slate. In the loss, McIntosh’s Cole Guenther and Starr’s Mill’s Zach Pina both poured in 15 points. Guenther’s long frame allowed him to slide inside and hit floaters, adding a nice dimension to his already lethal three-point stroke while Pina was in attack mode late for Heat Check, giving them a chance to win at the end.
Active Elite snuck past Team Edge Runnin Rebels in Game 2, 52-46. No strangers to winning games, the Allatoona duo of Chima Ogboi and Tyler Jackson helped Active Elite find a way to win. Ogboi netted a team-high 11 points while Jackson nailed free throws late in the game to extend the lead and preserve the victory.
The final game of the night saw Team EAT jump out to a 15-3 lead on the Georgia Bulls, but the boys from Augusta quickly turned the tables on Team EAT, using a 22-5 run to take a five-point lead and eventually coast to a 72-56 win. The Georgia Bulls are a fun team to watch due to their unselfish play. Kalen Williams kept the Bulls afloat early on during their struggles, hitting three early triples and finishing with a team-high 17 points. Ryan Jolly (pictured) was sensational in the backcourt with Williams. He finished with 10 points, five rebounds, 10 assists and two blocks. Mike Dukes did a little bit of everything as well with 12 points and nine rebounds while Deon Berrien controlled the paint with 14 points and 13 rebounds.
