Charleston Southern lands a big-time commit

Javis Howard did his homework, visited his options and decided on Friday that it was time to end his recruitment. The 6-foot-8 big man from Irmo (S.C.) is staying in-state and headed to Charleston Southern University.

Howard was an important piece to the Upward Stars puzzle this season and proved himself as one of the top mid-major big men in the Southeast's 2014 class. He's projected to be just as valuable in college and should help Charleston Southern right away in the low blocks.

"They have a great coaching staff there. I can talk to those guys all day long," Howard said. "We have a great relationship. I can see myself playing really well with their guys. They are big and versatile players. They play a four and one in. I think I can help them."

When he took a visit to the coastal school, Howard said he liked the fact that he was wanted and needed at his position.

"When I visited, they showed me their depth chart," Howard said. "I was the only one they were recruiting at my position. They wanted me and no one else. I felt really good about being their top priority."

Howard picked the Buccaneers over College of Charleston, Appalachian State and Murray State. Howard's addition could push CSU past the 20-win mark and deeper into the post-season.

"I'm going to work hard. They are a very good team and I want to help them become a great team," Howard said. "I want to be that guy for my high school team and I want to be that guy for them, too."

Coach BJ McKie served as the primary recruiter in the process.
