Garrett Tucker's Saturday Atlanta Jam Notebook

Saturday at the Atlanta Jam brought another day of good basketball. I spent the majority of my time at off-site gyms searching for under-the-radar guys and underclassmen. As expected, several kids made their mark.

Here are the storylines from Saturday…

UNDERCLASSMEN SHOW PROMISE

I opened up Saturday at a couple of off-site gyms, in hopes of finding a couple of sleeper prospects. It’s safe to say that I did just that, as a couple of underclassmen staked their claims as future prospects.

2018 Monroe (NC) Piedmont hybrid forward Hunter Tyson (pictured above) was one of the better prospects in the gym on Saturday. The 6-foot-7 forward can play both the 3 and the 4. He is smooth and fluid with his game, and his range extends well beyond the three-point line. Tyson finished with 22 points, as he scored from the perimeter and in the paint. His recruitment is still getting underway, but Davidson, Charlotte, Virginia, Tennessee, Wake Forest, UNC-Asheville, Mercer, William & Mary, and Clemson are all showing interest. He’s a guy to keep tabs on for mid-major programs.

2019 Tanner (AL) C.J. Yarbrough, a 6-foot-3 wing, showcased his all-around game on Saturday. He can score, pass, rebound, and shoot whenever needed. He is a terrific athlete and has a solid frame early in his career. Yarbrough earned All-State honors as a freshman, but he is also a football prospect. In fact, he has taken an early visit to Alabama. Either way, he has a promising future on the hardwood and is one of the better looking prospects in Alabama’s 2019 class.

Another unknown Alabama prospect that had a good showing on Saturday was 2018 Alexandria (AL) forward Dalton Dodd, who plays with Pro One Select Navy. The 6-foot-7 motor man can play both the 3 and the 4. He showed the ability to score from everywhere on the floor and cemented his name as a prospect to watch in 2018. His teammate, Dillon Harding, also had a good showing with his ability to pass and score the basketball from the perimeter.

TNBA SOUTH BRINGS THE HEAT

TNBA South 15U, a program from Orlando, brought the heat with them to Atlanta, as they had no problem turning things up on defense. They used a complete team effort Saturday morning to cruise by the Montgomery Fire.

The Florida-based squad’s guard play was spectacular, as they were led by two small guards. 2020 point guard Jonathan Gonzalez set the tone early with his defense and pass-first nature, while 2019 point guard Joshua Chapman closed things out in the second half with his ability to score and create for others. Both guys set the tone for the rest of the team and have promising futures.

While they were the most productive, 2019 big man Samuel Payne was the most intriguing. The 6-foot-8 big man is still recovering from scoliosis surgery a few months ago, but he has all the makings of a promising prospect in the future. He has great length and size and runs the floor well. He still needs to get stronger and more physical with the ball, but that will come with age and more playing experience.

DA HOUSE CONTINUES TO ROLL

Last year’s defending champions in the 15U division, Da House, is looking for repeat this year and they are on the right track heading into Sunday. The Mississippi-based squad had a phenomenal showing against Western Kentucky Elite Saturday afternoon, as they cruised by in a 78-52 win. Even without their star Robert Woodard, Da House is alive and well for championship Sunday.

Javian Fleming, a 6-foot-8 big man, has had a great start to the travel season. The sophomore has a wide body with good hands and feet, and he has been using it all to his advantage. Fleming scored around the rim over both shoulders and rebounded everything that came his way. He’s helped his stock as much as anyone this week.

Da House picked up 2018 point guard DeAnthony Tipler for this season and he didn’t disappoint Saturday. The explosive point guard scored 15 points in the first half against Western Kentucky Elite to get things rolling for his team. Defenders had trouble staying in front of him the entire day. 2018 combo guard JonDarius Warren closed things out in the second half, as he finished with 18 points after converting on four 3’s. There’s still some basketball to play Sunday, but Da House will definitely be involved in the 16U division.

CP25 SOUTHEAST ELITE 16U CLOSE OUT THE WEEKEND STRONG

The CP25 Southeast Elite group had another successful weekend at Suwanee Sports Academy. As usual, the program boasts several talented prospects.

Dante Treacy, a 2018 point guard from Central Florida Christian Academy (FL), had an outstanding day from start to finish. The 5-foot-11 playmaker is crafty and handles the ball very well. He carries himself confidently and has an outstanding feel for the game. It’s still early in his recruitment, but Stetson and Saint Louis are programs interested. An assistant from Stetson watch Treacy Saturday night in a win.

Another young name to keep an eye on within the program is 2019 Seminole (FL) 4 man C.J. Walker. The 6-foot-6 big man is extremely long and has a huge ceiling ahead of him. He still has a lot of filling out to do physically and basketball-wise, but he showed flashes of what could lay in the future. He’s one to track heading into the summer.
