PSB gets back to winning ways at Best of the South

SUWANEE, GA – Even disciplined and well ran programs have to re-group.

This is exactly what PSB Select had to do after the first day of the Best of the South on Thursday at Suwanee Sports Academy. The North Carolina-based organization just needed to understand everyone’s role on the team.

Whatever was said worked as PSB went undefeated on Friday and found the continuity it needed to improve it’s standing in pool play and get into bracket play with a winning record.

PSB went back to the basics: playing hard, playing tough and playing smart.

“We always have to have to always play all three,” PSB Select coach Brendan Winters said. “We will never beat teams if we don’t play that way.”

Winters knows the kind of team he has assembled. They are hard, scrappy and intelligent individuals who can play sound basketball. He also understands that he has to rein them in every now and then.

Some players decided to step away from what they are good at when it comes to the team concept of basketball. Who can blame them?

Many of them are trying to catch the eye of a college coach who looking for players. Sometimes these players equate being noticed based on the number of points they score. College coaches are not worried too much about that, they just want to see players make plays.

After PSB’s meeting Thursday night, the focus of the conversation was to get back to PSB basketball.

“Everyone was tired of losing,” said Jordan Watkins, a Davidson commit. “We talked about how we can improve as a team. Everyone has brought into sharing the ball and playing hard.”

Watkins, from Charlotte’s Providence Day High, helped will his team to w win with his unselfish play and knocking down shots in crucial moments against the Florida Elite. He finished with a game-high 23 points in the flow of the teams offense.

Teammate Connor Burchfield was solid as well. The Concord High product was nearly lights out from anywhere on the floor. Burchfield, who has committed to William & Mary, chipped in with 19 points as PSB Select beat Florida Elite on Friday.

“The making of our team is that we have to be unselfish.”

Winters would like that mindset to continue as the evaluation for this group of players concludes.

“They will get what they get,” he said regarding college offers. “They will get noticed by playing within themselves.”
