Welcome to Super Tuesday
It is Super Tuesday here in the Peach State and with region tournaments waiting in the wings next week, the regular season has some serious games to pay close attention to tonight. Here’s a peek at the very best match-ups in the state of Georgia on Tuesday night.
No. 13 Pebblebrook at No. 5 Westlake. What a contrast of teams right now. The Brook is surging, winning all but one game in January and the Falcons are on top of the state’s best region 3-AAAAAA with a 11-1 record. The only team that has beat them? You guessed it - Westlake. The Lions, the longtime No. 1 team in the Power Poll, has dropped two games over the course of the last four games. Expect a huge crowd at Westlake. And rightfully so. There’s a ton of talent in this game and a lot on the line.
Duluth at No. 3 Norcross. As usual, Region 7-AAAAAA is very good and games in the first week of February have some post-season meaning to them. The two sit atop the region and playoff implications are on the line. This could be one of the best in-county games for Gwinnett this regular season.
Milton travels for an all-too-important game at No. 4 Wheeler tonight in one of metro Atlanta’s best region rivalries. As usual, the two powerhouses are atop the Region 5-AAAAAA standings. First place is also on the line. It doesn’t hurt this is the last game between these two teams at The Doug on Holt Road. Wheeler is building a new basketball arena and will start play there next year.
POWER POLL: GEORGIA'S TOP 20 HIGH SCHOOL TEAMS
No. 8 Allatoona (23-0) is one of two undefeated teams left in GHSA play. The Bucs go on the road for a tough one at Villa Rica (15-7). Toona won the first meeting 54-45 at home. That was the closest game of the region schedule this year for the Bucs.
No. 10 Thomasville (21-1) has one loss on the season. Seminole County (18-4) gave it to them. The two South Georgia powers lock horns again tonight. We covered the first match-up and it was as good as advertised. Seminole County’s Jordan Harris is playing as well as any player there is in the Peach State right now. Hard to stop a freight train moving downhill in the final month of his high school career. We’ll be watching this one closely.
Region 8-AAAAA has a lot on the line tonight. No. 17 (Power Poll) Gainesville will play at Apalachee (17-4). The Red Elephants (16-4) won the first meeting 59-55 and sit on top of the region standings with an unblemished record. Out in Athens, Heritage (17-5) will play at No. 18 Cedar Shoals (22-2). The four best teams in the region could determine a lot for next week’s tournament with the outcomes in the games tonight.
