Three games to watch tonight 1/19
No. 10 Collins Hill (16-2, 6-2) at No. 2 Norcross (16-2, 8-0)
In their first meeting back on Dec. 8, Norcross walloped the Eagles at Collins Hill, 93-72. Rayshaun Hammonds posted 25 points to lead the attack from the inside while freshman Kyle Sturdivant (19), Jordan Goldwire (17) and Dalvin White (16) all pitched in to overwhelm the Eagles, who were without starting point guard Max Clark. TeShaun Hightower poured in a game-high 31 points and New Orleans-commit AJ Cheeseman added 11 but it wasn’t enough. Collins Hill has dealt with a litany of injuries this season but in the process have built more playable depth with other players getting a chance to showcase their skills. Sophomore post Chris Parks and swingman Kai Lambert, who scored nine points in their previous meeting, will need to play well and bang inside to control the glass against the bigger Hammonds and Lance Thomas. The Eagles have to muck it up defensively and not let the explosive Blue Devils get out in transition for easy buckets.
No. 7 Whitefield Academy (11-7, 4-2) at No. 2 St. Francis (13-5, 7-0)
Class A-Private’s best rivalry will be on display in Alpharetta as the Knights, winners of five-straight, look to collect another win against the Wolfpack, a team they beat 60-55 on Dec. 4. Newly minted McDonalds All-American and Arizona-commit Kobi Simmons will be Coach Tyrone Johnson’s main focus to stop. He scored a game-high 21 points last time out and was the only Knight in double figures. Simmons has averaged 26.6 points per game, but he isn’t Coach Drew Catlett’s only weapon. Senior guard Anthony Showell chips in 12.7 points, 4.7 rebounds and a team-high 3.7 assists per game. Chance Anderson is a skilled 6-foot-7 stretch forward that has posted a stat line of 11.8 points, 8.6 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.5 blocks his senior season. Whitefield has some playmakers of its own. Junior point guard Isaiah Hart scores a team-high 19.7 points on average while adding 4.8 assists and 2.8 steals. Senior wing Brendon Myles averages a double-double at 19 points and 10.6 rebounds. Both players scored 18 points against St. Francis but shot a combined 10-of-36 from the field. 6-foot-7 sophomore Tyson Jackson continues to improve on both ends of the floor and can cause problems inside for St. Francis.
North Hall (14-5, 2-1) at White County (14-5, 2-0)
In search of a good game in North Georgia? Look no further than White County for this important Region 8-AAAA tilt. North Hall is powered by a pair of smart and lethal guards in seniors Carson Heinen and Sam Jackson. Heinen is the team’s leading scorer and can get hot at the flip of a switch. He scored 17 points in Saturday’s win over Jefferson and netted 15 of his 21 points in the second half against West Hall to capture third-place in Lanierland. He also helped out on the glass with eight rebounds. Jackson finished with 10 points, five rebounds and seven assists in the win. The floor general does a good job of getting everyone in the right place and can find open shooters. North Hall’s X-factor is junior forward Evan Easton. He scored 25 points at Lanierland and shows nice touch from the free throw line extended. White County boasts four players that can lead the team in scoring any night led by senior 1,000-point scorer Whit Mauney. He and fellow seniors Desmon Mataro and Brad Hurst can fill it up. 6-foot-5 junior John Ward is a player to keep an eye on. He already has games of 36 points and a double-double of 24 points and 18 rebounds under his belt.
