What to watch for at the Hoop Hall Classic
The best high school event throughout the nation takes place this weekend in Springfield, Massachusetts. Three full days of action with some of the best teams and high school prospects take to the floor at Springfield College which makes up the famed Hoop Hall Classic. The matchups are pristine and with two ensuing college commitments taking place on Saturday, there isn’t a better place to be than at the Hoop Hall from Saturday to Monday.
What might we be looking forward to watching throughout the week?
1. Does Jayson Tatum continue to solidify himself as the best in 2016?
On Monday, the day gets going with a massive battle between Chaminade College Prep out of Missouri, and the DeMatha Catholic squad from the DMV. Furthermore, the senior season coming from Jayson Tatum, a five-star wing out of Chaminade, is off to quite the start. Now on the center stage in Springfield, what will the 6-foot-8 star have on tap?
Quite possibly the most polished prospect that the prep ranks has seen for some time now, Tatum, who is headed to Duke in the fall, can score the ball in any way possible. He has extended his range out to beyond the 3-point arc, has an absurdly good high elbow converting prowess to him, and for a guy that plays away from the basket so much, rebounds the ball at a very high rate. Going up against Markelle Fultz, another five-star senior guard who is committed to Washington, it is actually the matchup between Tatum and junior wing DJ Harvey that intrigues. Harvey recently narrowed his college list down to a group of 16 and with Duke as a heavy favorite for him, could the 6-fot-6 wing end up guarding the guy he could replace in Durham come two years from now?
2. Where will Kobi Simmons and Udoka Azubuike land?
Both Simmons and Azubuike have been household names now for sometime within the recruiting business. Simmons, a 6-foot-4 guard out of Georgia, is down to a final three of Ohio State, Arizona, and Kentucky. While Kentucky was in on the guard first and Ohio State was the perceived leader for his services back in the fall, all signs point to the Wildcats out in Arizona as the landing spot for the high upside guard suiting up for the St. Francis bunch.
Azubuike has seen a recruitment that has gone back and forth and while there has been talk for some time now about an ensuing commitment, it seems things are finally coming to a close. The 6-foot-9 center is a massive big man who clogs the lane on one end, and dominates on the other. Down to a final four of Kansas, NC State, Florida State, and UNC, it seems as if it’s a battle between the Jayhawks and Seminoles where things could go either way in the end.
3. Azubuike vs. Bamba: two vastly different type of elite big men
Sticking with Azubuike, the big man will go up against Westtown School in a rematch of its contest with the Pennsylvania based bunch that occurred at the City of Palms Classic. What really intrigues about this matchup is just how dominate the Nigerian center was the first time around and if Mohamed Bamba, a five-star big man in the 2017 class, can stop him in any which way possible.
Bamba gives up over sixty pounds the mammoth of the senior that is Udoka Azubuike and whether he can slow him down inside is definitely worth watching. However, the 6-foot-10 center sports an absurd 7-foot-8 wingspan and quick twitch muscles that allows for him to clean the glass and protect his rim with the best of them. Expect for Westtown to speed the game up a bit where, if it turns into a race from endline to endline, Bamba, the more mobile and agile of the duo, should be able to beat the Potters House star down the hardwood each and every time.
4. Does the Ball show keep going in Massachusetts?
Coming into the high school season, the Chino Hills crew out of California was a bit of a polarizing bunch. In January, they still are as, some might respect what they do, while others try and poke holes into its lack of willingness to defend. Regardless, is there a more entertaining bunch in all of America?
My answer…No. Led by Lonzo Ball, a 6-foot-6 guard who has received comparisons to former NBA All-Star guard Jason Kidd, the senior is quite possibly, one of the best passers that we have seen for some time now within the amateur ranks. His length of the floor passes are unbelievably accurate where they hit its target in stride and while he doesn’t have the best of mechanics on his jumper, it seems to find its mark more than not. Playing alongside his two other brothers, both of who are committed to UCLA right with him, the entertaining bunch takes on High Point Christian and it will be interesting to see how they counter the elite producer inside that is future Kentucky star center Bam Adebayo.
5. Who breaks out?
There are tons and tons of star power that will hit the floor throughout the weekend in Springfield. However, it is always the heightened stage that some prospects use properly in creating a better recruitment for themselves. Who fits the mold?
While he may have already broken out, expect for the offers to continue to roll in for Brandon Randolph. The 6-foot-5 swingman, who suits up for the Westtown School, can score the ball in various ways. After sitting out the summer with an injury, whenever programs get the chance to see the junior playmaker, they tend to leave in dishing out an offer to him. Just last week, Seton Hall, Vanderbilt, and Virginia Tech gave one to him; more should be expected within the coming days.
Suiting up for the massively talented High Point Christian crew, Michael Hueitt is ready to see his stock explode. While he already carries offers from Missouri and Clemson, it is always hard to find guys that can make shots with consistency. The Carolina native is beginning to bring in some higher-level interest with the likes of Louisville speaking with him; a few made shots on Monday and things could get ramped up a bit further.
Lastly, rebounding is something that always correlates, regardless of level of play. Josh Carlton, a 6-foot-9 center out of DeMatha, holds just two offers from Penn State and Old Dominion, yet the big man secures boards with the best of them and by showing that he can score it a bit inside, the native of North Carolina could see his stock soar entering the spring.
