Lake City Spotlight: Brian Thomas
Kell High School big man Brian Thomas is still looking under the Christmas tree. He’s looking for something that should already be there – his first scholarship offer.
The 6-foot-7 junior from the Marietta, Georgia school has been trending upward all season long and is primed for a school to pony up and offer a scholarship. The Lake City Classic could be the stage where it all comes together for him.
Thomas said he is without offers at the moment. That should change. There’s a strong contingency of college coaches at the Lake City Classic this year. Alcorn State, Kennesaw State, South Alabama, Tennessee Tech, Troy and Wofford were all on hand to see Thomas in action.
Thomas, a 3.6 grade point average student, said he’s hearing from Alabama, Brown, LSU, Middle Tennessee State, South Alabama, Tennessee Tech and Virginia Commonwealth.
Kell beat Whitefield Academy, a traditional Class A powerhouse in Georgia, 59-53 on Monday morning. Thomas finished with nine points and 13 rebounds in the win.
“I feel like we earned that win. We persevered through all of the foul trouble,” Thomas said. “That’s just the way I was raised. I’m not going to get mad and do something stupid.
“I feel like I’ve been playing well this year. I know I’m better than I was last year. I’m playing better with my back to the basket and I feel like my motor has improved.”
